2017 Audi Q7 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2017 Audi Q7 was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 9.1

The 2017 Audi Q7 is thrilling to drive, test drivers agree, and it outperforms many of its competitors. Its engine is potent and refined, and its automatic transmission makes smooth shifts. The Q7 is nimble and composed through turns.

  • "When it comes to overall performance, the Q7 far exceeds our expectations for a vehicle of its size and intended purpose." -- Edmunds
  • "The new Q7 is more fun to drive than many of its competitors, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE and Acura MDX." -- AutoWeek
  • "The powertrain strikes the same sort of just-right effect as the ride/handling balance." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Opting for a crossover utility vehicle with a third row of seats usually means dialing back the driving enjoyment. That isn't the case with the new 2017 Audi Q7, however, thanks to significant weight savings over its predecessor and a heaping portion of advanced technology." -- Car and Driver

Acceleration and Power

The 2017 Q7 is equipped with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that makes 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet torque. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the Q7 will get up to 19/25 mpg city/highway, which is a little better than average for the class. When properly equipped, the Q7 can tow up to 7,700 pounds.

The V6 makes ample power for highway driving and delivers its muscle as soon as the accelerator is pressed. It runs quietly, except when under heavy acceleration. The automatic transmission shifts seamlessly.

  • "… the supercharged V6 is a hearty engine. Power is effortless and immediate, and it's all very confidence-inspiring. " -- Autoblog
  • "The Q7's eight-speed automatic transmission is a plus, shifting smoothly and quickly enough to go unnoticed. I'll take it. In an age where gear-laden transmissions often obstruct performance, an eight-speed that keeps to itself is a good thing." -- Cars.com
  • "As we've learned from experiencing it in other Audi models, the TFSI engine is a powerhouse with a wide power band that pulls non-stop from idle to redline. In this application, it's also nearly silent unless you're really standing on the throttle." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "… with the 3.0-liter V6's output of 333 horsepower (an increase of about 19 percent) and 325 pound-feet of torque, the Q7 has no problem reaching highway speeds." -- Edmunds

Handling and Braking

The 2017 Q7 comes standard with all-wheel drive and Drive Select, which lets you choose from four driving modes: comfort, dynamic, auto, and off road. Adaptive air suspension and four-wheel steering are optional.

The Q7 has agile handling and stays controlled around corners with very little body lean, especially when equipped with the adaptive air suspension. The steering is nicely weighted, and models with four-wheel steering are easier to maneuver around tight spaces. The brakes inspire confidence with their pedal feedback.

  • "With well-weighted steering, a reassuringly firm brake pedal, and well-damped body motions, no road is a chore in the Audi." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "With most vehicles in this class tipping the scales at more than 5,000 pounds, descriptors like 'agile' and 'athletic' are seldom used. Not so with the Q7. Whether it's equipped with the optional Adaptive Chassis package that includes air suspension, the big SUV instills confidence, with very little body roll. Likewise, nosedive is minimized under hard braking." -- Edmunds
  • "Audi is usually near the head of the pack in steering weight and feel, even on its big models. This Q7 continues the trend with something that's truly fun to drive, for an SUV." -- AutoWeek
  • "As confident and sure-footed as it is with the standard steel suspension/adjustable shocks, the new Q7 gains an extra shot of sportiness when underpinned by an optional multi-mode/height-adjustable adaptive air suspension with 4-wheel steering. Available only on the top-line Prestige trim, it takes the already solid handling to a new level and trims the turning circle by three feet to make the Q7 easier to thread through crowded parking lots." -- Kelley Blue Book
