2015 Audi Q7 Review

The 2015 Audi Q7 serves up seating for seven and zesty engine performance. However, this used luxury midsize SUV ranks in the lower half of its class due to a design that showed its age even when the car was new.

2015 Audi Q7 Overview

Is the 2015 Audi Q7 a Good Used SUV?

The 2015 Q7 has upscale styling, everyday practicality, and Audi's sure-footed Quattro all-wheel-drive system. However, its small cargo space, tight third-row seats, and low predicted reliability score should encourage you to look at competitors.

Used 2015 Audi Q7 Performance and Interior

Base 2015 Q7s are powered by either a 280-horsepower supercharged V6 or a 240-horsepower turbocharged diesel V6 (TDI). S Line models are powered by a 333-horsepower supercharged V6. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The Q7 offers a comfortable ride, strong brakes, and standard Quattro all-wheel drive. Step on the gas, and you’ll be rewarded with quick yet smooth acceleration – though the Q7 can be difficult to maneuver in small spaces and corners somewhat clumsily.

The TDI model is the most impressive of the bunch; its added torque makes the SUV feel lighter, especially in stop-and-go traffic. The EPA no longer lists fuel economy estimates for the 2015 Audi Q7 TDI, but Audi reported a rating of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway when the diesel model was new. In contrast, both supercharged V6 models achieve 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway, which puts them on the low end of the segment.

The 2015 Q7 seats seven on standard leather upholstery. Heated, 12-way power-adjustable front seats are also standard. Available features include ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats.

The first and second rows offer sufficient seating comfort and good space. However, only small children will be comfortable in the third row. There are two lower anchors and two top tethers on the rear outboard seats of the second and third rows. Many of the anchors and tethers are hard to access and difficult to use.

Standard features include Audi’s MMI infotainment system, an 11-speaker sound system, and satellite radio. Available features include navigation, voice recognition, a Bose 14-speaker sound system, and a panoramic sunroof.

The 2015 Q7 delivers a sufficient haul of high-tech features, though there’s noticeably less standard equipment than what you’ll find in rivals. Audi’s MMI infotainment system operates using a rotary controller wheel and a selection of physical buttons, which are fairly user-friendly.

With all seats upright, the Q7 offers 10.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is small for the class. Fold the third and second rows flat, and this improves to 42 and 72.5 cubic feet, respectively.

Should I Consider Another Used Q7?

The 2015 Audi Q7 is the final year of the model's first generation, which began with the 2007 model. The Q7 received a refresh – including new engines – in 2011, and there were minor changes between then and the 2015 model year. Therefore, you may be able to find an older model with similar specs at a lower price.

Which Used Audi Q7 Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Audi Q7 comes in three trims: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The Premium and Premium Plus trims offer either the supercharged V6 or turbodiesel V6 (TDI) engine. The Prestige model comes with either the TDI or the S Line's supercharged V6 engine. For the best features, go with the midlevel Premium Plus trim with the turbocharged V6. This model offers plenty of power and comes with Audi's MMI infotainment system, heated front seats, blind spot monitoring, and a rearview camera.

For additional peace of mind, consider a certified pre-owned Q7. Audi CPO vehicles receive the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, then enjoy an additional two-year/50,000-mile comprehensive warranty. The two warranties differ in important ways, and there may be additional services like roadside assistance, so read the Audi warranty page carefully. Audi CPO models must pass an inspection covering 300-plus points.

2015 Audi Q7 and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Audi Q7 or 2015 BMW X5?

The BMW X5 has better all-around performance than the Q7, especially when it comes to handling. It feels stable around corners, whereas the Q7 has clumsy handling around turns. The X5 also has a more potent lineup of engines, providing quicker acceleration. Additionally, the X5 comes with more standard features and offers more advanced driver assistance features, making it the better choice of the two SUVs.

Which Is Better: 2015 Audi Q7 or 2015 Porsche Cayenne?

The Porsche Cayenne is a real performance machine; its powerful acceleration and athletic handling beat the Q7 on the road any day of the week. However, its high cost of ownership may make you think twice before making a purchase. The Cayenne also only seats five (the Q7 seats seven), and it has about 10 cubic feet less cargo space. Still, it offers a predicted reliability rating of 4.5 out of five compared to the Q7's two out of five. If you can afford its high cost of ownership, buy the Cayenne.

Which Is Better: 2015 Audi Q7 or 2015 Acura MDX?

When it comes to value, the 2015 Acura MDX delivers. The MDX offers impressive fuel economy and zippy V6 power, as well as nimble handling, an upscale interior, and generous driver assistance features. The MDX has three rows of seats and more cargo capacity than the Q7. We named it our 2015 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money when it was new.
