2011 Audi Q7 Review

The 2011 Audi Q7 looks distinctive and gets great safety scores, but test drivers aren’t impressed by its driving dynamics or its interior. Even with its diesel engine, its fuel economy is barely above average.

Pros & Cons

  • Great safety scores
  • Sleek looks
  • Not much fun to drive
  • Cramped third row
  • Mediocre fuel economy

New for 2011

  • New supercharged V6 in S-line trims
  • New standard eight-speed transmission

2011 Audi Q7 Overview

The 2011 Audi Q7 gets good safety scores, looks good and offers seating for seven. Test drivers appreciated the Q7’s sleek exterior, powerful V6 engines and responsive diesel powerplant. Unfortunately, that’s where the Audi Q7 stops standing out. While reviewers agreed that the Audi Q7 is a decent luxury SUV, they also agreed that there’s not much to differentiate it from the crowd of other luxury crossovers.

Test drivers noted that the Audi Q7 is so big that it’s nowhere near sporty, and S-line models with the V6 engine don’t have great gas mileage. Fuel economy from the diesel engine, which is supposed to be especially good, is barely above the class average. The third row of seats is tiny, and testers ranked the Q7’s interior near the bottom of the class. If you’re married to the Audi brand and you need three rows of seats, the Q7 is your choice, but most reviewers agreed that other luxury crossovers offer better fuel economy and driving dynamics.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 Lexus GX is immensely capable off-road and provides a comfortable, luxurious interior. Since it’s based on the 2011 Toyota 4Runner, it’s a champ over muddy roads or off the beaten track, but it’s less car-like than its car-based crossover competitors. Its fuel economy is worse than the Audi Q7’s, but it’s a great choice for a truck-based SUV with tons of capability.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz M-Class does a much better job of combining on-road performance and fuel economy into a three-row luxury crossover. The M-Class offers a diesel engine and a gas-powered V6 like the Audi Q7, but also has a V8 model and even a sport-tuned AMG trim, along with an appropriately luxurious interior.
