2020 Audi Q5 Performance Review

Performance: 8.1

The 2020 Audi Q5 delivers good all-around performance. Its base engine provides plenty of power, and there's also the high-performance SQ5 for shoppers who want more juice. This Audi has a cushioned ride, and it handles curves better than many of its peers, though it's still a step behind super sporty rivals like the Porsche Macan.

  • "The Q5's … 4-cylinder engine and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission are a good pairing, propelling this compact-luxury sport ute to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Dry asphalt, snowy road or sandy dirt trail, the Q5 feels equipped to handle most terrain within arm's length of civilization and do so in comfort." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "This drivetrain combo never feels underpowered, with lively pull throughout the engine's rev range, yet it should also better the old Q5's fuel economy figures of 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway thanks to its lower weight and revised Quattro system. Unlike some other dual-clutch transmissions, my drive suggests low-speed refinement is a strong suit, not a weak spot." -- CNET (2018)

Acceleration and Power

The Q5 comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 248 horsepower. This engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This powertrain moves the Q5 with ease and helps the Audi quickly accelerate from a stop. The transmission holds up its end of the bargain by shifting smoothly and on time.

The high-performance SQ5 features an even stronger engine: a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 349 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard in the SQ5.

According to EPA estimates, the Q5 gets 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Those are typical ratings for the luxury compact SUV class.

  • "All 2020 Q5s feature a … turbocharged four-cylinder, a seven-speed automatic transmission, and Quattro all-wheel drive. The turbo four provides plenty of punch to scoot the Q5 around town or blast down a highway on-ramp, and it is smooth, quiet, and mellifluous." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Q5’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine comes standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission that routes power to all four wheels via standard quattro all-wheel drive. The sophisticated system enhances fuel efficiency by powering the front wheels most of the time, and will shift as much as 100 percent of the power rearward as needed. You won’t notice it working, but you will feel the added security, especially in slippery conditions." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Adding to the Q5's enjoyment is a peppy 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder with … 273 pound-feet of torque on 17.4 pounds of boost pressure. While the previous generation rolled with a traditional torque-converted automatic transmission, the new model works with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox offering fantastically quick shifts and a stellar manual shift function." -- CNET (2018)

Handling and Braking

The Audi Q5 will satisfy drivers who like to have fun driving as well as those who just want a comfortable cruising vehicle. This small SUV handles well, staying planted around turns without too much body roll. It rides smoothly, even over rough roads. You can switch between five driving modes that alter the Q5's dynamics to your liking, and Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system comes standard.

  • "The luxury compact crossover's suspension is well damped and imparts a stable feeling no matter the road or driving condition. The ride is smooth and controlled – with or without the optional adaptive suspension – even over pockmarked asphalt. The steering is accurate and lightly weighted but provides no discernible feedback from the front wheels. In the Dynamic drive mode, the steering feels heftier but still artificial. Pitch the Q5 down a twisty two-lane and it'll handle it with aplomb, but a Porsche Macan will still show you a better time." -- Car and Driver
  • "On twisty mountain roads, the 2019 Q5 feels more like a sports sedan than a crossover SUV. But that doesn’t mean it sacrifices comfort around town or on the highway, where we appreciate the quiet, well-controlled ride." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "It was easy to drive the Q5 fast over the twisting bits, with body roll kept in check and steering providing enough feedback to inspire confidence. If you want more involvement, the steering-wheel paddles elicit quick yet smooth gearshifts." -- Autoblog (2018)
