2019 Audi Q5 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 8.8

The 2019 Audi Q5 is one of the best in the class when it comes to performance. It manages to deliver athletic handling while still maintaining a comfortable ride. Acceleration is quick regardless of the engine you choose, and the optional SQ5 trims are ideal for shoppers who crave sporty handling.

  • "The Q5's 252-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission are a good pairing, propelling this compact-luxury sport ute to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Dry asphalt, snowy road or sandy dirt trail, the Q5 feels equipped to handle most terrain within arm's length of civilization and do so in comfort." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "This drivetrain combo never feels underpowered, with lively pull throughout the engine's rev range, yet it should also better the old Q5's fuel economy figures of 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway thanks to its lower weight and revised Quattro system. Unlike some other dual-clutch transmissions, my drive suggests low-speed refinement is a strong suit, not a weak spot." -- CNET (2018)

Acceleration and Power

With the standard 248-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the Q5 accelerates quickly, and the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission makes quick shifts. With this setup, the Q5 delivers slightly above-average fuel economy estimates of 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

Audi SQ5 models feature sporty enhancements like an upgraded suspension system and a stronger 349-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. This engine comes with a tiptronic eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy drops to 19/24 mpg city/highway with this engine.

  • "The Q5’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine comes standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission that routes power to all four wheels via standard quattro all-wheel drive. The sophisticated system enhances fuel efficiency by powering the front wheels most of the time, and will shift as much as 100 percent of the power rearward as needed. You won’t notice it working, but you will feel the added security, especially in slippery conditions." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The … Q5 still feels as sharp and punchy as its predecessor. Brisk acceleration from a standstill and swift when called upon at highway speeds." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Adding to the Q5's enjoyment is a peppy 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder with 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque on 17.4 pounds of boost pressure. While the previous generation rolled with a traditional torque-converted automatic transmission, the new model works with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox offering fantastically quick shifts and a stellar manual shift function." -- CNET (2018)

Handling and Braking

The Q5 is both practical and fun. It stays composed around turns, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive, and the steering has decent feedback from the road. The Q5's handling is also sporty, and available steering wheel-mounted shift paddles help make the Q5 more engaging. Four driving modes are also available, allowing you to customize the ride to your driving preferences.

  • "On twisty mountain roads, the 2019 Q5 feels more like a sports sedan than a crossover SUV. But that doesn’t mean it sacrifices comfort around town or on the highway, where we appreciate the quiet, well-controlled ride." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It was easy to drive the Q5 fast over the twisting bits, with body roll kept in check and steering providing enough feedback to inspire confidence. If you want more involvement, the steering-wheel paddles elicit quick yet smooth gearshifts." -- Autoblog (2018)
  • "The new Q5's ride feels somewhere between firm and comfortably soft. Even on 20-inch wheels, the ride is agreeable." -- Edmunds (2018)
