2020 Audi Q5 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.9

The 2020 Audi Q5 has one of the nicest interiors in the class. It's sleek and stylish, and premium materials cover every surface. Both rows of seats are roomy and comfortable, and cargo space is above-average for the class. There are plenty of standard and available tech features, including a user-friendly infotainment system.

  • "The 2020 Q5 provides enough room for four adults to get comfy and offers plenty of upscale features, even on the base Premium model. The cabin is both quiet at speed and easy to get in and out of." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Q5 is a serious contender for best interior in its class." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • "From the seats to the spacious cabin feel to the quality of upholstery, stitching and materials on panels and touch points, the Q5 embodies the kind of luxury for which Audi has become renown. This is a first-class interior." -- Edmunds (2018)

Seating

The Q5 can seat up to five people in two rows. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and power-adjustable front seats come standard. Alcantara leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, front sport seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats are available.

Visibility for the driver is excellent, and the comfortable front seats have ample head- and legroom. The rear seats have enough space to accommodate adults as well, though the raised floor in front of the middle seat makes it awkward for three people to sit in the back.

For installing child safety seats, there are two sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether for the middle seat.

  • There's serviceable room for both front and rear passengers to ride without complaint, but the rear middle passenger will have to deal with a large center floor hump." -- CNET (2018)
  • "Excellent materials, solid-feeling switches, logical layouts, and comfortable seats with plenty of room for passengers all make for an impressive place to be. Visibility is excellent in every direction thanks to a high seating position and low beltline. Front occupants have plenty of headroom and legroom, and a slight increase in the wheelbase for 2018 seems to have improved backseat roominess, as well - no longer does it feel cramped." -- Cars.com (2018)
  • "The Q5 seats five, so long as the center rear passenger doesn't mind a rather inferior perch. The other four passengers get comfortable, supportive seats, with leather seating surfaces and heated power seats in the front row (ventilated available)." -- Autotrader (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Q5 include tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch display, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, HD Radio, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, Audi's Virtual Cockpit, wireless device charging, a 19-speaker premium audio system, satellite radio, the MMI All-In-Touch system with handwriting recognition, an 8.3-inch infotainment display, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Audi's infotainment system is easy for most people to figure out. Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy to sync your smartphone to the vehicle. The available MMI All-In-Touch system is more sophisticated, but it also allows for new methods of control, including touch-screen functionality and handwriting recognition.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, Audi Pre Sense Basic (helps protect vehicle occupants when the vehicle detects an imminent collision), and Audi Pre Sense City, which alerts the driver of pedestrians and other vehicles on crowded streets. Available active safety features include rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, a surround-view parking camera system, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, traffic jam assist, and adaptive cruise control.

  • "Buyers of even the least expensive Q5 will enjoy an intuitive infotainment system displayed in a dashtop 7.0-inch screen; an 8.3-inch unit is optional. Most of the expected infotainment features are present and accounted for in the base Q5, including a Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Things get much more interesting if you add the optional navigation system, as it comes with a reconfigurable digital gauge cluster that Audi calls Virtual Cockpit. It provides a wide, 12.3-inch view of the nav map plus selected media, phone controls, trip computer, speed, and tachometer, or a combination of these." -- Car and Driver
  • "Like any self-respecting luxury vehicle, the Q5 punches high on the technology scale with available navigation, great-sounding Bang & Olufsen audio, Wi-Fi hotspot and head-up display. As on the TT, A4 and Q7, the Q5 can be optioned with Audi's Virtual Cockpit, replacing a traditional analog gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch configurable screen, too. If you're a fan of running your car's infotainment functions through your smartphone, you'll also be pleased to learn that the Q5 includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard throughout the range." -- CNET (2018)
  • "Audi typically sets the pace among rivals for tech offerings, and the Q5 is no different. With features that include 4G LTE Wi-Fi, a touchscreen infotainment/navigation interface and an optional, customizable 12-inch high-resolution instrument panel, the Q5 is a technology showpiece." -- Edmunds (2018)

Cargo

The Audi Q5 offers 25.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back row and 53.1 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down. Those are subpar totals for the luxury compact SUV class. The split-folding rear seats give you some added cargo flexibility. A power liftgate is standard, and a hands-free liftgate is available.

  • When it came to seeing how many of our carry-on cargo boxes fit, the Q5 didn't impress. It beat the smaller Macan, but only just and held 18 cases with the rear seats folded. The Q5's rear seatbacks easily fold in a 40/20/40 fashion, however, providing flexibility that the Lexus RX doesn't have." -- Car and Driver
  • Cargo space is solid … but less than [what's offered by] rivals like the Acura RDX and BMW X3." -- CNET (2018)
