2019 Audi Q5 Interior Review

Interior: 8.1

The 2019 Audi Q5 features an upscale cabin with quality materials like standard leather upholstery and wood trim. The seats are comfortable and supportive in the first and second rows, and lots of space is available for occupants to stretch out. You'll also find numerous standard and available features, including standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an optional virtual cockpit, and an available infotainment system that utilizes handwriting recognition.

  • "The Q5 is a serious contender for best interior in its class." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • "On the plus side, the Q5's interior is a significant improvement over the predecessor's. It has better materials, improved ergonomics, and the latest and greatest technology." -- Motor Trend (2018)
  • "From the seats to the spacious cabin feel to the quality of upholstery, stitching and materials on panels and touch points, the Q5 embodies the kind of luxury for which Audi has become renown. This is a first-class interior." -- Edmunds (2018)

The Q5 can seat up to five people in two rows. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, four-way lumbar support, and eight-way power-adjustable front seats are standard. You can upgrade the Q5 to include heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, Alcantara upholstery, driver's seat memory settings, a heated steering wheel with shift paddles, and 12-way power-adjustable front sport seats.

The seats are roomy in both rows, and they provide ample comfort and support. That said, the middle seat is positioned over a high floor hump, which limits foot room. There are two sets of LATCH child car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats, along with an upper tether on the middle seat.

  • There's serviceable room for both front and rear passengers to ride without complaint, but the rear middle passenger will have to deal with a large center floor hump." -- CNET (2018)
  • "Excellent materials, solid-feeling switches, logical layouts, and comfortable seats with plenty of room for passengers all make for an impressive place to be. Visibility is excellent in every direction thanks to a high seating position and low beltline. Front occupants have plenty of headroom and legroom, and a slight increase in the wheelbase for 2018 seems to have improved backseat roominess, as well - no longer does it feel cramped." -- Cars.com (2018)
  • "The Q5 seats five, so long as the center rear passenger doesn't mind a rather inferior perch. The other four passengers get comfortable, supportive seats, with leather seating surfaces and heated power seats in the front row (ventilated available)." -- Autotrader (2018)

Interior Features

The Q5 has a ton of standard features, including tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and a 7-inch color driver information display. The standard infotainment system has a 7-inch display, a 10-speaker audio system, voice command, Bluetooth, HD Radio, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. A rearview camera, Audi Pre Sense Basic, and Audi Pre Sense City are also standard.

Infotainment upgrades include a 19-speaker premium audio system, MMI All-In-Touch with handwriting recognition system, a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit, and an 8.3-inch infotainment display. You can also equip the Q5 with additional safety features, such as rear cross traffic alert, front and rear park assist, a head-up display, a 360-degree parking camera, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. A Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, satellite radio, keyless entry, and a panoramic sunroof are also available.

The standard infotainment system is operated by physical controls on the control panel, which makes the system easy to use. The available MMI All-In-Touch system is great for tech-savvy folks. You can pinch-to-zoom on the touch screen like you would on a smartphone. It also gives you the ability to write out commands with your fingers.

  • "The optional 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster is highly functional and attractive, and it can accommodate future software upgrades installed at the dealer. Audi's MMI rotary and touchpad controllers, located on the center console just ahead of the T-shaped shifter, operate the central 8.3-inch display screen. The pad reads pinch and zoom commands plus address information entered via finger touch, one letter at a time. Overall, it's a reasonably intuitive and easy-to-operate infotainment system." -- Car and Driver (2018)
  • "Like any self-respecting luxury vehicle, the Q5 punches high on the technology scale with available navigation, great-sounding Bang & Olufsen audio, Wi-Fi hotspot and head-up display. As on the TT, A4 and Q7, the Q5 can be optioned with Audi's Virtual Cockpit, replacing a traditional analog gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch configurable screen, too. If you're a fan of running your car's infotainment functions through your smartphone, you'll also be pleased to learn that the Q5 includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard throughout the range." -- CNET (2018)
  • "Audi typically sets the pace among rivals for tech offerings, and the Q5 is no different. With features that include 4G LTE Wi-Fi, a touchscreen infotainment/navigation interface and an optional, customizable 12-inch high-resolution instrument panel, the Q5 is a technology showpiece." -- Edmunds (2018)

There is 26.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back row and 60.4 cubic feet of space when the rear seats are folded down. These estimates are slightly above average for the luxury compact SUV class. The Q5 comes standard with split-folding 40/20/40 rear seats that allow for more cargo versatility. A power liftgate is standard, and a hands-free liftgate is available.

  • Cargo space is solid … but less than rivals like the Acura RDX and BMW X3." -- CNET (2018)
