2009 Audi Q5 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2009 Audi Q5 was new.

Interior: 8.4

Reviewers praise the 2009 Q5's high level of luxury and even compliment the cockpit controls, which are more intuitive than previous Audi models.

  • "The cheaper materials you typically see in this class are absent in the Q5, which has the same top-quality plastics, vinyls, leather and wood as the A4. The control layout is identical, too, and the only appreciable difference is the ability to outfit the Q5 with a panoramic sunroof." -- Edmunds
  • "The Q5 cabin is nearly identical to the A4's, which is no bad thing. It is all quite intuitively designed, right to the flip-down rear seats, which are easily actuated from the cargo area." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "You will, though, discover lots of style inside the Q5's roomy cabin, which is nicely turned out with the kind of understated elegance that has helped make Audi the envy of the auto industry." -- Wheelbase Communications
  • "Inside, the cabin is much of what we've come to expect from Audi. Materials are top notch, and accents vary from wood to aluminum to polished ‘Piano Black' plastic." -- Motive Magazine

The Audi Q5 comes standard with leather seating for five. Reviewers find it comfortable and roomy, although they say the rear seat is a bit tight with three adult passengers.

  • "Even without the extra-large skylight, the 2009 Audi Q5 manages to feel roomy whether you're seated in the front or rear. The rear seats recline, and Audi says fore/aft adjustment will be available, too." -- Edmunds
  • "Passenger space is on par with that of the A4. We wish the front seats would tilt rearward a bit more and offer more thigh support, but the driving position is still commendable." -- Car and Driver
  • "The rear seats are quite roomy for two adults -- three would be a tight fit. Both the front and rear seats felt comfortable if firm." -- MSN
  • "Seats are well-bolstered and comfortable, and the front-to-rear adjustable rear-seat bench with a 60/40 split is a nice touch." -- Motive Magazine

Interior Features

Standout features on the all-new Q5 include Audi's Multi Media Interface (MMI) dashboard screen and control knob, an optional heated/cooled cupholder and an optional power tailgate. Test drivers say the general interface and optional navigation system are better than ever.

  • "Audi's MMI is much improved in the Q5, and we'd suggest ticking the option box. Gone are full-screen windows noting simple adjustments, replaced by a much more intuitive interface that uses momentary pop-ups." -- MSN
  • "The screen display for the optional navigation system is among the best we've seen. It provides three-dimensional-style images of buildings and topography that's similar to what you see on Google Earth. Audi of America has not yet confirmed, but we expect they will offer a traffic-reporting function as well; the Euro-spec vehicles we drove in Spain had the feature." -- Automobile Magazine

The 2009 Audi Q5's cargo capacity is adequate for a compact SUV. But what really sets it apart is its versatility, which is aided by the sliding rear seat. An especially innovative feature is the roof rack, which senses when it's carrying a load and transmits the information to the Q5's electronic stability system.

  • "Although the Q5's luggage capacity of 19 cubic feet doesn't seem like much compared to the 30 cubes of the BMW X3, the cargo bay feels roomier than that." -- Edmunds
  • "One cool option is the ‘rear bench seat plus,' which allows the rear seat to slide about 4 in. forward to load large objects into the cargo area, which holds 55 cu-ft. of gear." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "With the Q5, Audi's electronic innovation reaches the roof rack. It has built-in sensors that communicate with the electronic stability control system to automatically adjust its parameters according to the change in the Q5's center of gravity as you pile more stuff on the roof." -- Car Gurus
