2019 Audi Q5 Review

The 2019 Audi Q5’s lively engines, sporty handling, and loads of standard features help it earn a spot near the top of our luxury compact SUV rankings.

Pros & Cons

  • Lots of standard features
  • Agile handling
  • Comfortable ride
  • Powerful engine choices
  • High base price
  • Limited foot room in the middle seat

Is the Audi Q5 a Good Car?

The 2019 Q5 is an outstanding luxury compact SUV that expertly balances athleticism and comfort. Both its standard and optional engines are strong and help this SUV accelerate quickly. Performance-minded shoppers can choose one of the sport trims for even more power and improved handling. The Q5’s cabin is one of the best in the class, with plenty of standard features, quality materials like standard leather upholstery, and roomy seating and cargo areas. The only real deterrents are the Q5's minimal foot room in the middle seat and its high base price. However, you get a lot for this price. In fact, it was a finalist for our 2019 Best Luxury Compact SUV for the Money award because of its combination of quality and value in its class. We also named it a finalist for our 2019 Best Luxury Compact SUV for Families award because it has one of the best combinations of cargo and passenger space, safety and reliability ratings, positive reviews from automotive journalists, and available family-friendly features.

Should I Buy the Audi Q5?

The Q5 is one of the more well-rounded options in the class, and it comes with lots of standard features. It’s one of the most expensive luxury compact SUVs, however, and you can find several lower-priced rivals that rank just as highly. The less expensive Acura RDX is one of the most engaging vehicles in the class, and it boasts a spacious cabin and a generous list of standard features. The Mercedes-Benz GLC is also a highly rated vehicle with a lower base price than the Q5. It has a sumptuous cabin, plenty of standard safety features, and a smooth ride.

Should I Buy a New or Used Audi Q5?

The 2019 Q5 is part of a generation that debuted for 2018. Audi added heated front seats to the Q5's standard features list and introduced the SQ5 Premium trim for 2019. Because those are relatively minor changes, you may want to consider a 2018 Q5 instead, which is likely less expensive.

You can save even more money on a model from the previous generation, but you won't get the benefits from the 2018 redesign, which improved fuel efficiency, added extra horsepower in the base engine, increased the maximum cargo capacity, and added standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Available forward collision warning with automatic braking was also new for 2018.

Audi Q5 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Audi Q5 or Mercedes-Benz GLC?

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has one of the most luxurious cabins in the class, with plush seats, a long list of features, and plenty of space for adults. It also has a lineup of powerful engines, and it costs a couple thousand dollars less than the Q5. However, the Audi outranks the Mercedes on our site because it feels more athletic on the road and offers more standard features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Which Is Better: Audi Q5 or Acura RDX?

Those looking for a budget-friendly alternative to the Q5 should consider the Acura RDX. It offers a lot of what you'll get with the Q5, like a jampacked standard features list, plenty of interior space, and an attractive cabin with many soft-touch materials. It also has a strong engine, a comfortable ride, and athletic handling. If you want even better performance, go for the SQ5 and its powerful twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Otherwise, save some cash and get yourself an RDX, which is the better value between these two.

Q5 Interior

How Many People Does the Q5 Seat?

There's seating for up to five people in the Q5. Adults should feel comfortable in both rows, and the seats have plenty of support. The rear seats also slide and fold, allowing you to reallocate space between the seating and cargo areas. That said, there is a large hump in the floor that hampers middle-seat foot room.

Heated eight-way power-adjustable front seats with four-way lumbar support come standard. Available features include 12-way power-adjustable front sport seats, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, Alcantara upholstery, driver's seat with memory settings, and a heated steering wheel with shift paddles.

Q5 and Car Seats

There are two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats and an upper tether on the middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Q5's LATCH system its highest rating of Good for ease of use.

Q5 Interior Quality

The Q5's cabin boasts upscale materials like standard leather upholstery. Reviewers note its attention to detail in things like the upholstery stitching and the quality materials on the Q5's interior panels.

Q5 Cargo Space

The Q5 has 26.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 60.4 cubic feet of cargo space when the back row is folded down. These are slightly above-average estimates. The Q5 also comes standard split-folding 40/20/40 rear seats, which comes in handy when you're trying to fit a person in the rear and still store a significant amount of cargo. A power liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free liftgate is available.

Q5 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Techies will love the Q5. It comes standard with a 7-inch infotainment display, a 7-inch color driver information display, voice command, a 10-speaker sound system, HD Radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto?

The standard infotainment system has physical knobs on the control panel for making adjustments. An optional MMI All-In-Touch system allows you to use smartphone-style controls like pinch-to-zoom. You can also use your finger to write out commands and destinations for the navigation system.

Other available features include a head-up display, tri-zone automatic climate control, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, satellite radio, navigation, a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit, an 8.3-inch infotainment display, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Q5 Performance

Q5 Engine: Plenty of Pep

With its turbocharged, 2.0-liter 248-horsepower four-cylinder engine, the 2019 Q5 accelerates promptly. The standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission executes timely shifts. Q5 Gas Mileage: Just Average

There are no fuel economy estimates for the 2019 Q5 at the time of this writing. The fairly similar 2018 Q5 delivers 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with the base engine. These are estimates are about average in the class. Models with the twin-turbocharged engine get 19/24 mpg city/highway.

The Final Call

The 2019 Audi Q5 is an excellent luxury compact SUV that is worth your consideration. It has agile handling, a composed ride, and quick acceleration from both of its available engines. The cabin is loaded with high-tech features, quality materials, and lots of space for passengers. The only real hang-up is its above-average base price and scarce foot room in the rear middle seat.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "The Q5 was Audi USA’s best-selling model in 2018, the model year in which this compact SUV was upgraded with added power, better efficiency and improved looks. Because this compact-luxury SUV is still so new, little has changed with the 2019 Audi Q5, apart from some enhanced package and trim options. …The Q5 and SQ5 stand out in this fiercely fought segment, helped by their laudable comfort and capability, plus its fine sense of style and lengthy list of standard safety features." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "In this space increasingly crowded with alternatives from BMW, Cadillac, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, the Audi Q5 remains a standout." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "While it's a little pricier than most direct competitors, its luxurious appointments, high-tech cockpit and plentiful room make the Audi Q5 stand out." -- Cars.com (2018)
