2020 Audi Q5 Review

The 2020 Audi Q5 finishes in the top third of our luxury compact SUV rankings. It delivers engaging performance and has a posh interior, making it one of the most-well-rounded vehicles in the class.

Pros & Cons

  • Engaging handling
  • Smooth ride
  • Posh, spacious interior
  • Intuitive infotainment tech
  • Below-average cargo capacity
  • More expensive than many of its classmates

Is the Audi Q5 a Good SUV?

Yes, the Audi Q5 is a very good choice among luxury compact SUVs. It feels energetic when you hit the accelerator, whether it's equipped with the turbo-four base engine or the high-performance twin-turbo V6. The Q5 handles corners well and rides comfortably even over rough roads, and it has one of the most luxurious interiors in the class. There's ample passenger room as well, though cargo space is below-average for the class.

Should I Buy the Audi Q5?

Given its overall quality, buying the Q5 may seem like a no-brainer. It's certainly a strong choice in the class, but it also has a higher starting price than many rivals do, so you may be able to find something else that offers more bang for your buck. If you can spend a bit more, check out a few Q5 alternatives, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3.

Should I Buy a New or Used Audi Q5?

The 2020 Q5 belongs to a generation that began with the 2018 model year. There are no major changes for 2020, but for 2019, Audi added heated front seats to the Q5's standard features list and introduced the SQ5 Premium trim. Those are relatively minor changes, so you may want to consider a 2018 Q5, which is likely less expensive and otherwise nearly identical.

You can save even more money on a model from the previous generation. However, these Q5s don't offer the benefits of the 2018 redesign, such as improved fuel economy, extra horsepower with the base engine, a higher maximum cargo capacity, and new features like standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Audi also added available forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking for 2018.

Audi Q5 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Audi Q5 or Mercedes-Benz GLC?

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has perhaps the most luxurious cabin in the class, with top-notch materials, plush seats, and plenty of space in both rows. The GLC also has a lineup of powerful engines, and its base price is lower than that of the Q5. However, the Audi feels more athletic on the road and offers a longer list of standard features that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both SUVs are excellent choices, so we suggest picking the one that best matches your budget and driving style.

Which Is Better: Audi Q5 or BMW X3?

The BMW X3 and Audi Q5 have a lot in common. On the performance front, both have turbocharged four-cylinder base engines and high-performance models with powerful V6s. These SUVs also handle turns well and ride smoothly. On the inside, the Audi is a little more attractive and stylish, though the X3's interior is still nice. Both luxury crossovers have ample passenger space in both rows, but the BMW has a slightly higher maximum cargo capacity. When it comes down to it, there's not a lot to separate these SUVs, so the right choice comes down to your preferences.

Q5 Interior

How Many People Does the Q5 Seat?

This Audi crossover seats five people. Both rows of seats have enough head- and legroom for adults, and they provide ample comfort and support. That said, the middle seat is positioned over a high floor hump that limits foot room.

Q5 and Child Car Seats

There are two sets of LATCH connectors on the rear outboard seats and an upper tether on the middle seat.

Q5 Interior Quality

For a top-notch interior, look no further than this Audi. It looks great inside, and quality materials like standard leather upholstery and wood trim give the cabin an opulent feel.

Q5 Cargo Space

The Q5 has less cargo space than many of its classmates. It gives you 25.1 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats and 53.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Q5 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control and an infotainment system with a 7-inch display, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, HD Radio, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, Audi's Virtual Cockpit, wireless device charging, a 19-speaker premium audio system, satellite radio, the MMI All-In-Touch system with handwriting recognition, an 8.3-inch infotainment display, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

The standard infotainment system's physical controls make the system easy to use. The available MMI All-In-Touch system is great for tech-savvy folks. You can pinch to zoom on the touch screen like you would on a smartphone or tablet. It also gives you the ability to write out commands with your fingers.

Q5 Performance

Q5 Engine: One Turbo or Two?

The Q5 features a 248-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder base engine, but just because it's the standard offering, that doesn't mean it's a slouch. This engine is plenty energetic, making the Q5 quick off the line, and it doesn't feel underpowered on the highway. True thrill seekers will likely want to step up to the high-performance SQ5. It takes things to another level with a 349-horsepower twin-turbo V6.

Q5 Gas Mileage: Solid Ratings

The Q5 earns typical fuel economy ratings for a luxury compact SUV. It gets 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Q5 Ride and Handling: Plenty to Like

While it can't match the agility of the Porsche Macan, the Q5 handles well by small crossover standards. It's fairly nimble on winding roads, and there's not too much body lean. Even when the pavement is rough, the Q5 rides smoothly.

The Final Call

The 2020 Audi Q5 is a great choice, as evidenced by its top-tier finish in our luxury compact SUV rankings. It delivers enjoyable performance and a comfortable ride, and it has a spacious, upscale interior. There are plenty of easy-to-use tech features as well. It's a bit pricey compared to the rest of the class, but with so much to offer, you can certainly argue that it's worth the money.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "The Q5 was Audi USA’s best-selling model in 2018, the model year in which this compact SUV was upgraded with added power, better efficiency and improved looks. Because this compact-luxury SUV is still so new, little has changed with the 2019 Audi Q5, apart from some enhanced package and trim options. … The Q5 and SQ5 stand out in this fiercely fought segment, helped by their laudable comfort and capability, plus its fine sense of style and lengthy list of standard safety features." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "In this space increasingly crowded with alternatives from BMW, Cadillac, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, the Audi Q5 remains a standout." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "While it's a little pricier than most direct competitors, its luxurious appointments, high-tech cockpit and plentiful room make the Audi Q5 stand out." -- (2018)
