2019 Audi e-tron Interior Review

Interior: 7.5

The 2019 Audi e-tron has a refined cabin with excellent fit and finish and state-of-the-art technology such as the widely praised Virtual Cockpit. Cargo space is typical among classmates.

  • "The e-tron's interior design is elegantly simple and checks all of the boxes for refinement and quality." -- Edmunds
  • "On paper, then, the E-Tron doesn't seem to move the needle. But the Audi's cabin is way more upscale than the Tesla's, and it offers better rear passenger room than the Jaguar." -- Motor Trend
  • "… sit inside and shut the door of the E-Tron and you'll discover a feeling of substance that's lacking in Tesla's SUV. Doors close with a confidence-inspiring 'thunk' and every surface of the interior reinforces that impression." -- CNET

This Audi seats five people on standard leather upholstery. Power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats are standard too. Upgraded leather seats, massaging front seats, and heated rear seats are available.

The front and rear seats are comfortable and supportive, and the cabin is well-insulated, keeping out harsh road and wind noises. It’s easy to enter and exit the vehicle too, thanks to its large door openings. There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats.

  • "The front seats are plenty supportive for long-distance comfort. The available massage functions will get you to your destination with even less fatigue. Rear seats are flat by comparison, but provide ample comfort and support for adults." -- Edmunds
  • "Back to the cabin: The seats are fine, somewhere between Lexus/Buick soft and Volkswagen hard. There's plenty of adjustment and I found a good, supportive driving position easily." -- Autoweek
  • "Audi slathered gobs of sound-deadening throughout the body, including behind the door panels, to obviate need for artificial noises in the cabin." -- Autoblog

Interior Features

Standard goodies include the Audi Virtual Cockpit and the MMI infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Bang & Olufsen premium stereo, a navigation system, wireless phone charging, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. A few comfort and convenience features, such as quad-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start are also included.

Standard safety features in this Audi include rear cross traffic alert, rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a top-view camera system. Optional driver aids include traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, surround-vehicle sensors with a pre-collision system, and a head-up display.

Some critics say the MMI infotainment system is tricky to use because of its awkward screen placement and lack of physical controls. However, the abundance of technology, including smartphone integration and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, helps it feel modern. The Virtual Cockpit is a customizable interface that takes the place of the traditional gauge cluster. It displays infotainment, speed, and navigation information in a clear, easy-to-read manner so you don't have to look away from the road for long.

  • "If you’ve recently driven a new Audi, you’ll find the interior of the e-tron familiar. The driver-oriented cockpit, the navigation, Bluetooth, and other interfaces are all familiar. Really, everything about the e-tron is just familiar in a modern, technologically advanced manner of acquiring a brand-new smartphone. You may spend a few hours getting used to it, but by the end of the day it’s an extension of your hand." -- Forbes
  • "I confess I miss the speed, simplicity and tactility of the rotary controller, but this new MMI is still very good to use, among the most powerful yet responsive systems in a modern car. It's miles and miles ahead of the stutter-step system found in the Jaguar I-Pace and far more comprehensive than what Tesla's still putting in the Model X, and not just because it supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. But there's a third screen worth mentioning, and that's the gauge cluster. The latest rendition of Audi's vaunted virtual cockpit is here, a big, bright and dazzling interface with enough resolution to obviate the need to display the Google Maps-enhanced navigation data in the central MMI screen, leaving that free for media browsing or whatever else you like. If that isn't enough, there's a head-up display, too. The tech of this car goes far deeper, though, and that integrated nav system has been augmented to automatically suggest chargers along the way, even signaling which are in-use." -- CNET
  • "The latest version of Audi's MMI infotainment system strikes us as a step backward. The screen is no longer in the driver's sightline and the lack of physical shortcut buttons can be distracting." -- Edmunds

The Audi e-tron has 28.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up. Folding them unveils a maximum of 57 cubic feet. Those are decent figures for the class.

  • "With 28.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the back seats and a maximum of 57 cubic feet, the e-tron is more accommodating than its chief rivals. There's also a deep bin underneath the cargo floor and a small compartment under the hood that is perfect for charging cables." -- Edmunds
