2020 Audi e-tron Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.7

The 2020 Audi e-tron has an attractive interior with lots of quality materials, an advanced dual-screen infotainment system, and generous seating space in both rows. There’s also quite a lot of cargo space for a luxury EV SUV.

  • "The e-tron's interior design is elegantly simple and checks all of the boxes for refinement and quality." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "On paper, then, the E-Tron doesn't seem to move the needle. But the Audi's cabin is way more upscale than the Tesla's, and it offers better rear passenger room than the Jaguar." -- Motor Trend (2019)
  • "… sit inside and shut the door of the E-Tron and you'll discover a feeling of substance that's lacking in Tesla's SUV. Doors close with a confidence-inspiring 'thunk' and every surface of the interior reinforces that impression." -- CNET (2019)

Seating

The Audi e-tron is available in SUV and Sportback body styles. Both have five seats. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and there’s lots of head and legroom for taller occupants. The rear seats aren’t as supportive, but there’s still plenty of room for adults to fit comfortably. One of the e-tron’s top highlights is its quiet cabin; there’s very little wind or road noise at speed.

Leather upholstery and front seats with heat and ventilation are standard. Massaging front seats and heated rear seats are available. For securing child car seats, there are two full sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and an upper tether for the rear middle seat. This LATCH system is considered easy to use.

  • "The front seats are plenty supportive for long-distance comfort. The available massage functions will get you to your destination with even less fatigue. Rear seats are flat by comparison, but provide ample comfort and support for adults." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The seats are fine, somewhere between Lexus/Buick soft and Volkswagen hard. There's plenty of adjustment and I found a good, supportive driving position easily." -- Autoweek (2019)
  • "Audi slathered gobs of sound-deadening throughout the body, including behind the door panels, to obviate need for artificial noises in the cabin." -- Autoblog (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features in the e-tron include two touch screens, a digital gauge cluster, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, two USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, a smartphone charging pad, four-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, a power liftgate, a sunroof, and Audi's Virtual Cockpit, which replaces the traditional gauge cluster with a customizable 12.3-inch digital display.

A surround-view parking camera system, parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, front and rear collision warning, a rearview camera, and automatic emergency braking are also standard.

Available features include side collision warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, a head-up display, ambient interior lighting, an air fragrance system, rear sunshades, and power soft-closing doors.

The dual-screen infotainment system has a bit of a learning curve, but it’s user-friendly once you get the hang of it. The upper 10.1-inch touch screen controls the radio, the navigation system, and the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps. The lower 8.6-inch touch screen handles the climate controls. Most reviewers find the graphics crisp and the menus easy to understand.

  • "If you’ve recently driven a new Audi, you’ll find the interior of the e-tron familiar. … Really, everything about the e-tron is just familiar in a modern, technologically advanced manner of acquiring a brand-new smartphone. You may spend a few hours getting used to it, but by the end of the day it’s an extension of your hand." -- Forbes (2019)
  • "I confess I miss the speed, simplicity and tactility of the rotary controller, but this new MMI is still very good to use, among the most powerful yet responsive systems in a modern car. It's miles and miles ahead of the stutter-step system found in the Jaguar I-Pace and far more comprehensive than what Tesla's still putting in the Model X, and not just because it supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. But there's a third screen worth mentioning, and that's the gauge cluster. The latest rendition of Audi's vaunted virtual cockpit is here, a big, bright and dazzling interface with enough resolution to obviate the need to display the Google Maps-enhanced navigation data in the central MMI screen, leaving that free for media browsing or whatever else you like." -- CNET (2019)
  • "The latest version of Audi's MMI infotainment system strikes us as a step backward. The screen is no longer in the driver's sightline and the lack of physical shortcut buttons can be distracting." -- Edmunds (2019)

Cargo

The Audi e-tron SUV has 28.5 cubic feet of cargo space with its rear seats up and 57 cubic feet with them folded. The e-tron Sportback has a lower roofline that reduces these capacities slightly to 27.2 and 54.5 cubic feet, respectively. Those are good figures for the luxury hybrid and electric SUV class.

  • "… the e-tron is more accommodating than its chief rivals. There's also a deep bin underneath the cargo floor and a small compartment under the hood that is perfect for charging cables." -- Edmunds (2019)
