2018 Audi Allroad Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Audi Allroad was new.

Interior: 8.3

The 2018 Audi A4 Allroad has the high-quality cabin you expect from an Audi. The design looks great, and the quality of materials is outstanding. Both rows of seats are comfortable and spacious, and the Allroad’s infotainment system is user-friendly. Cargo space is average for a wagon.

  • "The 2017 Audi A4 Allroad shares much of its interior with the A4 sedan, which received high praise in our evaluations. Materials quality is excellent, even for this luxury class, with sturdy design and construction." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Audi knows how to design an interior, and the A4 Allroad reflects top-shelf soft-touch materials, real burl walnut trim and Audi's MMI with one of the best multifunction controllers in the business." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "We'd be hard pressed to think of an interior that Audi has screwed up recently, and the latest A4 has a particularly good one that translates well to the Allroad." -- Autoblog (2017)

The Allroad has a roomy cabin with seating for five. The front seats are supportive, and both rows of seats have plenty of legroom. The rear seats also have ample headroom for taller passengers. The only time the Allroad feels cramped is when three adults are sitting in the back seat, but even that is only be a problem on longer drives.

There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats. The middle seat has a tether anchor, but no lower anchors. The lower anchors are easy to find and require little force when installing a car seat. The tether anchors are also easy to locate.

  • "When the back seats are in place, they're plenty comfortable for two adults, with ample head and knee room. Fitting three would be a squeeze, but it'd be doable over a short distance." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "Most of the Allroad's interior measurements remain identical to the A4 sedan, which likely means it will feel as spacious. When evaluating the sedan, we commented that the cabin felt more like a midsize luxury sedan, with an abundance of space for front and rear passengers. Six-footers could easily fit in the rear seats, and the Allroad even gains an advantage with slightly more headroom." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The good news inside of the Allroad is that it's basically identical to the A4 sedan. That means the front seats provide plenty of support and room, and back-seat passengers receive an extra 2.5 inches of legroom compared to last year, though this is still no stretch limousine." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Interior Features

The Allroad’s standard features include a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker sound system, HD Radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a 5-inch driver information display, a rearview camera, Audi Pre Sense Basic, Audi Pre Sense City, and Audi’s MMI infotainment system with a 7-inch display.

Optional features include satellite radio, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system, an 8.3-inch center screen, a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit display, navigation, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, Audi Pre Sense Rear, and a head-up display. Additional available features include rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go sensing, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, a top-view camera system, collision avoidance assistance, and Audi Connect services, which include emergency responder notification, roadside assistance, voice-control navigation, real-time traffic updates, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

You control the standard MMI infotainment system with a knob on the center console, and it works better than some rivals' setups. The available touch-screen MMI system has sharp graphics and recognizes handwriting in addition to responding to normal touch inputs. The only downside is that some of the controls are hard to reach. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto give you easy smartphone connectivity, and they come standard, unlike in some competitors.

  • "The updated [infotainment] system with a new scroll wheel is better than previous ones we've tried, and the touchpad is more responsive without being overly sensitive to inputs. The center 8.3-inch … screen is clear and bright, and the system is simple enough to adjust while sitting in the driver or passenger seat." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "The sharp infotainment screen is placed high atop the dash, keeping more of the driver's attention on the road. The MMI system takes some getting used to, but after a short time, operation becomes second nature. The same can be said of the available virtual instrument panel that adds a distinct high-tech edge to the cabin." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The whole thing is powered by an Nvidia quad-core processor for smooth animation and crisply rendered text and graphics throughout all operations. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Audi is offering the best designed, most fully featured and most usable cabin technology on the road today. And, if you still don't like what the automaker has to offer, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay allow drivers to bring their own tech into the cabin." -- CNET (2017)

The A4 Allroad has a typical amount of cargo space for a wagon, providing 24.2 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 58.5 cubic feet with them folded down. The rear seat split-folds 40/20/40, so you can fold down part of it for extra space while leaving some of the seating intact. That's also a little more versatile than some competitors, which only offer 60/40 split-folding seats.

The Allroad's cargo hold adds usability with its multiple tie-down points. When folded, the rear seat is nearly flat, giving you a nice cargo floor. There's also a relatively low liftover height, making it easier to load heavy items. However, the slanted back window may make it hard to fit bulky cargo. A power liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free power liftgate is available.

  • "There's ample volume in the cargo area, which also has tie-down points and two side cubbies with nets. The 40/20/40-split back seat folds almost flat. A low liftover height makes for easy cargo loading. The raked rear window, however, may inhibit loading of tall and bulky items." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2018 Audi Allroad's 5-passenger cabin is one of its best assets. Behind the rear seats is over 24 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the 40/20/40-split rear seats, and there's an SUV-like 58.5 cubic feet of space." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There also is a divider to protect back-seat passengers from loose items, and the seatback folds in 40/20/40 sections for maximum versatility." -- Car and Driver (2017)
