2020 Audi A8 Performance

U.S. News Best Price Program

2020 Audi A8 Performance Review

Performance: 7.6

The 2020 Audi A8 has decent engine power, a comfortable ride, and light, accurate steering. However, acceleration could be quicker, and fuel economy is pretty poor.

  • "The Audi A8 is easy to drive and unexpectedly athletic." -- Car and Driver
  • "Cars like the A8 are more about cruising in comfort than racing to the next traffic light." -- Motor Trend (2019)
  • "The Audi A8 is pleasant in motion, thanks to its breezy drivetrain, a rather well-isolated chassis, and competent, bump-soaking suspension." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)

Acceleration and Power

The Audi A8 comes standard with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. An optional 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 makes 453 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The base engine has plenty of power, but acceleration is mixed. It can take some time for full throttle response to kick in.

The S8’s twin-turbo V8 is good for 563 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. At the time of writing, we don’t have enough information to evaluate this powertrain.

The standard 2020 A8 gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, which is poor for a super luxury car. Models with the 453-horsepower V8 return 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The Audi S8 gets 13/22 mpg city/highway.

  • "There's decent power on tap, but passing slow-moving rental cars … requires some planning; don't expect explosive forward motion, but rather a linear escalation of speed and nearly imperceptible gear changes." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "The powertrain feels strong but a tad sleepy. … It's possible to catch the turbocharger or gearbox sleeping in stop-and-go traffic, resulting in occasionally poor tip-in throttle responsiveness in the Comfort and Eco settings." -- CNET (2019)
  • "Everything about the A8 is smooth and accommodating, and power delivery is no exception. The V6 has plenty of power for this 4,700-pound car." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Handling and Braking

The all-wheel-drive Audi A8 has composed handling and a comfortable ride, and steering is precise. It’s difficult to maneuver this big car in tight places, though available all-wheel steering makes it easier. There's also not much steering feedback from the road.

  • "The A8 offers a very Audi-like blend of athleticism and ride comfort. … With the base suspension, the Audi A8 isolates you from road irregularities but can still hammer down a back road when the mood strikes. The steering is striking in its precision, though there's not much feedback. Braking is a strong suit." -- Car and Driver
  • "It goes down the road silently and effortlessly pretty much no matter the mode, always with a plush, composed ride and light but accurate steering. … There’s a little body roll in comfort mode, but not much. Overall the ride/handling mix is quite good for a car this big. The cars equipped with four-wheel steering feel especially agile." -- Autoweek (2019)
  • "The A8 is engaging to drive and provides an excellent balance of handling precision and ride comfort. Audi equips the A8 with four selectable driving modes. The two fixed modes, Dynamic and Comfort, provide enough variation in handling and comfort to make a noticeable difference in what you feel from the car." -- Edmunds (2019)
