2019 Audi A8 Interior Review

Interior: 9.0

The 2019 Audi A8 has a sleek and modern cabin that features upscale materials. Seating accommodations are excellent, and a wholly revamped infotainment system is easy to use. The A8 has below-average trunk space for the class, though.

  • "Beyond the dazzling touchscreens, the A8's interior elegantly combines nicely finished surfaces – open-pore woods, brushed aluminum trim, piano black bits and soft Valcona leather, which is Audi's derivation of Nappa leather – into a harmoniously appointed space. The cabin feels minimalist but sophisticated and pleasant." -- Autoblog
  • "Consistent with all Audis of late, the new interior is a sober revision on an already businesslike theme. Although it lacks flourish, the materials and assembly quality are exquisite and complement the modern, if subtle, redesign." -- Car and Driver
  • "High-quality materials, pleasing aesthetics, and a quiet interior reinforced the sedan’s theme of serene luxury." -- Kelley Blue Book

The Audi A8 seats five people in its standard configuration. The Executive Rear Seat Comfort package reduces the capacity to four and adds a massaging footrest and power-adjustable, heated, ventilated, and massaging rear seats.

Valetta leather upholstery and heated, 18-way power-adjustable front seats are standard. Options include 22-way power-adjustable, ventilated, and massaging front seats; a heated steering wheel; Valcona leather seats; and heated rear seats. The A8 has two complete sets of rear-seat LATCH connections. All of the A8's seats are plush and comfortable, and there's ample second-row room.

  • "For 2019, Audi has chosen to only import the long-wheelbase A8 L to the US with nearly one foot of additional legroom on the second row than the standard Euro model. So our A8 already boasts plenty of room for passengers, but available upgrades can pamper and outright spoil the driven." -- CNET
  • "The seats feature plenty of adjustment range, as does the steering wheel. The seat width is excellent, and you never get the feeling of being cramped or even cocooned. At maximum intensity, the available seat-massaging function may be uncomfortable for some, but the two remaining less intense settings should be just right. Seat ventilation and heating are also very effective." -- Edmunds
  • "For starters, the driving position is excellent, and the front buckets are superb." -- Autoweek

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2019 Audi A8 include four-zone automatic climate control, power rear side- and rear-window sunshades, a panoramic sunroof, proximity key entry, push-button start, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The standard dual-screen infotainment system includes Bluetooth, a USB port, a 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, HD Radio, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation. The Audi A8 also comes with a suite of driver assistance features, including front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, automatic high beams, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

Options include a 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen advanced surround-sound stereo, a dual-screen tablet entertainment system, a DVD player, a rear USB port, a rear-seat household-style power outlet, a head-up display, an Alcantara headliner, ambient interior lighting, and an air ionizer. You can also add on advanced safety features, such a surround-view parking camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, intersection assistant, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and night vision assistant with pedestrian detection.

The A8's infotainment system features responsive touch screens and a straightforward, user-friendly interface. The touch screens take care of most commands, with few physical buttons or knobs for other adjustments.

  • "As setups go, Audi’s new MMI touch response system works quite well, with intuitive menu architecture and two screens that can be setup with haptic feedback and three levels of pressure sensitivity (or a purely touch-sensitive arrangement, a la a smartphone). But the issue is not so much the execution as it the loss of buttons and switches that maintain a feeling of connectedness to the car as an operational mechanical vehicle." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Audi emphasized reducing the amount of hard-button-based controls, a move that made us skeptical at first, but the system is surprisingly intuitive. The A8 uses a new version of the company’s MMI system, which has dual stacked screens, both within easy reach, and is no longer operated through a main knob. … It took very little time to learn the infotainment controls, and Audi retained a physical volume knob as part of the system. The only noticeable downside to having two screens instead of a series of dials and controls is that fingerprints stand out more. You may want to stow a microfiber cloth in the center console to keep things looking clean." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "With Audi's Virtual Cockpit and two large touchscreens, the center console is largely devoid of knobs and buttons. Thankfully, Audi also took the time to develop a system that's intuitive to use and responds quickly to inputs, so the lack of buttons shouldn't be an issue." -- Motor Trend

The 2019 A8 has 12.5 cubic feet of trunk space, which is among the lowest capacities in the class. A hands-free power trunk comes standard.
