Which Model Year of the Audi A8 Is Best?

The 2015 A8 is part of a generation that spans the 2011 through 2018 model years. Audi made several changes throughout the generation.

The A8 received an available W12 engine for 2012, and for 2013, it gained a supercharged V6 base engine and an optional turbocharged V8. Audi reintroduced the S8 that same year. For 2014, Audi introduced a turbodiesel A8 TDI model. The 2014 A8 also picked up some new standard features, including a power trunk lid, a rearview camera, and parking sensors. For 2015, Audi restyled the A8's front end. That same year, a head-up display and lane keep assist became available. The long-wheelbase body style became the base model for 2016. For 2017, Audi discontinued both the turbodiesel model and the W12 engine. There were no major changes for the 2018 model year.

If you’re going to get a used A8, we recommend choosing the 2016 model. You get the benefit of the longer wheelbase, plus all the features added for the 2015 model year.

Which Used Audi A8 Model Is Right for Me?

The 2015 A8 comes in five trims: 3.0T, 4.0T, S8, W12, and TDI. Each trim comes with a different engine. The base trim's V6 lays down enough power to meet most driving needs, and the 4.0T trim features a more potent V8 that's nearly as fuel efficient as the base engine. For loads of unadulterated power, look to the W12 and S8 trims, which have 500- and 520-horsepower engines, respectively. The TDI trim features a fuel-efficient turbodiesel engine.

There are also two wheelbase lengths. The 3.0T and 4.0T trims are available in standard- and long-wheelbase body styles. The S8 only comes in a standard-wheelbase body style, and W12 and TDI trims come exclusively as long-wheelbase models.

Standard features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a rearview camera, parking sensors, an adaptive air suspension, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch display, 14 speakers, navigation, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. There are other features specific to certain trims, but choosing the right one for you really comes down to how much power you desire.

Certified Pre-Owned Audi A8 Warranty

Audi’s certified pre-owned vehicles are five years old or less and have fewer than 60,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale’s date. Qualifying vehicles bought under the new car warranty have coverage until five years from the vehicle’s original in-service date with no mileage limitation. Certified pre-owned Audis bought after the new car warranty has ended enjoy an additional one-year/unlimited mileage comprehensive warranty. The two warranties differ in important ways, and there may be additional services like roadside assistance, so read Audi’s warranty page carefully. Audi CPO models must pass an inspection covering 300-plus points.

Based on our research, Audi has a better CPO program than rivals like BMW, but it's not as comprehensive as the CPO coverage offered by Porsche and Jaguar.

2015 Audi A8 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 Audi A8 or 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Both the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the A8 have strong engine lineups, comfortable rides, and spacious interiors. There are a number of advantages to the S-Class. Its engines are generally more potent than those of the A8, and the S-Class features an available plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Unlike the A8, the S-Class is available as a sedan or a coupe. The Mercedes also comes with more standard features, including forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. All this comes at a price, however. You’ll pay more for the Mercedes, and your ownership costs will be considerably higher. Before buying, test-drive both and assess what you're willing to spend.

Which Is Better: 2015 Audi A8 or 2015 Porsche Panamera?

A 2015 Porsche Panamera will cost you considerably more than the A8, but it's worth the additional expense. This Porsche is one of the sportiest vehicles in the class, delivering expert cornering composure and sharp steering. It also boasts rapid acceleration, and it has one of the highest predicted reliability ratings among super luxury cars. The Panamera only seats four, but both its standard- and long-wheelbase models have plenty of cabin space for adults. Because the Panamera is a hatchback, however, it offers a higher cargo capacity than the A8. If you can afford it, go for the Panamera. Otherwise, the A8 makes a good, lower-priced alternative to the Porsche.

How Does the 2015 Audi A8 Drive?

The A8 delivers a balanced ride that's both athletic and comfortable. This Audi's handling is agile, its steering is responsive, and its suspension does a good job of mitigating road bumps. Plus, it remains composed around corners thanks to the A8's standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

There's no shortage of engine choices with this Audi. The base 3.0T’s 333-horsepower supercharged V6 engine produces plenty of power, and it's the most fuel-efficient option in the A8 lineup. The 4.0T comes with a punchier 435-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 that gets this Audi up to speed more quickly. For brute power, there's a 520-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 engine in the S8 model, as well as a 500-horsepower W12 engine in the W12 model.

The A8 is also available as a 240-horsepower TDI turbodiesel model. These models were affected by Audi’s diesel emissions scandal, and they require modifications to meet EPA standards. Make sure these necessary repairs have been made before you buy one, and keep in mind that those changes could alter performance and fuel economy.

All A8 models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Does the 2015 Audi A8 Get Good Gas Mileage?

The standard 3.0T model gets 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which is good for the class. The 4.0T drops 1 mpg in the city and gains 1 mpg on the highway, while the S8 models deliver 17/27 mpg city/highway. W12 models get poor gas mileage estimates: 14/22 mpg. The TDI model earns an outstanding 24/36 mpg.

How Many People Does the 2015 A8 Seat?

Adults should also have enough interior space regardless of which seat they choose. Long-wheelbase A8 L models have an extra 4 inches of rear-seat legroom over the standard model.

Leather upholstery, 18-way power-adjustable front seats, and heated front seats are standard. Heated, ventilated and massaging power-adjustable rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2015 Audi A8?

A rear-seat entertainment system and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system are available.

The A8's infotainment system has quick menu response times and sharp graphics. However, its touchpad controller is integrated near the bottom of the center console, which is a far reach for some drivers.
