2015 Audi A8 Overview

Is the 2015 Audi A8 a Good Used Car?

The Audi A8 is a fine used super luxury car. It stands tall as one of the most athletic cars in its class, rocketing up to speed with command. The A8 strikes a superb balance between ride comfort and handling, and it has a roomy and library-quiet cabin, many standard tech features, and lower-than-average used car prices. That said, rivals like the Porsche Panamera have higher predicted reliability ratings and superior cargo space. Consider the A8 – but shop around, too.

Used 2015 Audi A8 Performance and Interior

Audi offers the 2015 A8 sedan in five trim levels, and each corresponds to a different engine choice: 3.0T (333 horsepower), TDI diesel (240 horsepower), 4.0T (435 horsepower), S8 (520 horsepower), and W12 (500 horsepower). A refined eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (Quattro) are standard in all models. The base model 3.0T gets up to speed quickly and returns an efficient 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The A8 4.0T sees little change in fuel economy (18 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway). The S8 4.0T (17/27 mpg city/highway) turns out a sizzling 3.9-second run to 60 mph. The A8 W12 has a velvety 12-cylinder engine, but low fuel economy (14/22 mpg city/highway).

Audi also sold A8 TDI models with a turbodiesel V6; however, this engine is affected by Volkswagen’s diesel emissions scandal and will require modifications to meet EPA standards. Shoppers looking for used TDI models should be cautious, as these modifications may alter performance and fuel economy.

The A8 handles confidently for such a large sedan, and it feels especially athletic on tight, winding roads. Its adaptive air suspension – standard in all models – keeps the A8 planted and minimizes body roll. It also sops up the jolts from bumpy pavement and provides a soft, comfortable ride when cruising.

The Audi A8 seats five. Models equipped with the Executive Rear Seat package, however, seat four, and they feature a rear center console and refrigerator (available in A8 4.0T and W12 trims only). The standard heated front seats provide great support and comfort. The rear seats are similarly cozy and have ample head- and legroom. Long-wheelbase A8 L models (available in all but the S8 trim) improve rear-seat comfort further by adding an extra 4 inches of legroom. Luxe heated, ventilated, and massaging front and rear seats are available. The A8 dazzles with its quiet, well-dressed interior. Materials quality is superb; plush leather and rich wood accents cover many surfaces. That said, the Audi offers just 14.2 cubic feet of trunk space – relatively small compared to class rivals.

Audi equips all A8 models with a 7-inch display screen, a navigation system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a touchpad that senses handwriting. The A8’s MMI infotainment system has fairly user-friendly controls, and its crisp display reacts quickly to inputs. Available features on some – if not all – models include two 10-inch DVD screens, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a head-up display that projects pertinent information onto the windshield.

How Safe Is the A8?

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has published full crash test results for the 2015 A8. The A8 is available with many advanced safety features, however. Audi equips all models with front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. The optional Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with brake assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. Additional features include a 360-degree camera system and a night vision camera with pedestrian and animal detection.

Should I Consider Another Used A8?

The 2015 A8 marks the fifth model year of the car’s third generation. Updates for 2015 include a lightly redesigned fascia and new LED headlights, plus an available head-up display and lane keep assist system. These updates aren’t very substantial, so you may want to consider shopping for similarly equipped 2013 and 2014 models to save money. The A8 gained a standard supercharged V6 in 2013 and an available diesel V6 in 2014.

Which Used Audi A8 Is Right for Me?

Each of the A8’s five trims (3.0T, 4.0T, S8, W12, and TDI) is equipped with the following standard features: a 7-inch infotainment screen, a navigation system, keyless entry, Bluetooth, satellite radio, leather upholstery, heated seats (front), a rearview camera, parking sensors, and an adaptive air suspension.

Options can vary widely between used models. It’s best to shop around if you’re looking for a specific feature, like massaging seats or the safety systems of the Driver Assistance package.

You may want to consider a certified pre-owned A8 as well. Audi CPO vehicles receive the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, then enjoy an additional two-year/50,000-mile comprehensive warranty. The two warranties differ in important ways, and there may be additional services like roadside assistance, so read the Audi warranty page carefully. Audi CPO models must pass an inspection covering 300-plus points.

2015 Audi A8 and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Audi A8 or 2015 BMW 7 Series?

The BMW 7 Series toes the same line as the A8. Both luxury sedans put an emphasis on athletic driving dynamics and ride comfort, while also providing a roomy and well-dressed interior, zesty engine performance, and great tech and safety features. The BMW scores slightly higher in reliability. On the other hand, the Audi is often more affordably priced. Both are fine options, just not class leaders.

Which Is Better: 2015 Audi A8 or 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

The Mercedes S-Class is an exceptional luxury car. It’s unmatched in its class for advanced safety and convenience features, interior quality, and ride comfort. The catch is that it’s also exceedingly pricey. Opt for an A8 and you’ll find much of that refinement, luxury, and technology – for a lot less money.
