2020 Audi A7 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.7

The 2020 Audi A7 looks great inside. It's stylish, and there are premium materials throughout the cabin. Both rows of seats provide all-day comfort and support, and the A7 boasts one of the largest cargo holds in the luxury large car class. Its lengthy standard and available features list includes an intuitive infotainment system.

  • "Beyond the screens, the cabin is well finished and rational, although lacking the theater of the more extravagant interior in the Mercedes-Benz CLS." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • "The rest of the A7's cabin is no less slick or covetable, with first-class leathers, low-gloss open-pore woods and real metal trim configured in both painstaking and artful fashion. … Like the A8 above it and the A6 below it, the A7 offers a class-leading interior that feels entirely worthy of its no-doubt premium pricing." -- CNET (2019)
  • "Slide into the new A7, and its redesigned cabin presents a dramatically updated look and feel over the outgoing model. There are pleasantly sculpted interior surfaces with available wood veneer treatments which gently arc and flow with those creases." -- Autoblog (2019)

Seating

The A7 seats five people and comes standard with leather upholstery, heated front seats, and power-adjustable front seats. Valcona leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

Few will complain about the A7's accommodations. The front seats are comfortable, roomy, and supportive, and the driver enjoys excellent visibility. The rear seats have enough head- and legroom for two adults, but putting three grown-ups in the back will be a squeeze.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the A7’s rear outboard seats, as well as a tether-only connection for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this system its highest rating of Good for ease of use.

  • "The A7 also provides a satisfying driving position that is complemented by excellent outward visibility. Rear-seat passengers receive climate controls, power points for charging devices, and even heated seats, which are all optional. While the back seat comfortably accommodates two adults, three full-size frames would be cramped." -- Car and Driver
  • "Also as before, there's plenty of room to stretch out in front, while rear-seat passengers have surprisingly decent legroom (a bit more than before, in fact), and adequate headroom for a pair of 6-footers (taller if they're willing to slouch a bit)." -- CNET (2019)
  • "While exterior proportions remain unchanged, the A7's new aluminum and steel chassis expands half an inch in wheelbase and 0.8 inches in interior length, boosting legroom, headroom, and knee room for rear passengers. Access to those rear seats now involves less head banging, while the slick, frameless door design has thankfully been retained." -- Autoblog (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features in the A7 include a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, and the MMI infotainment system with an 8.8-inch upper touch screen for primary infotainment functions and an 8.6-inch lower touch screen for climate and secondary functions. A 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay also come standard.

The dual-screen MMI interface is user-friendly once you get used to it. The screens are large, responsive, and easy to see. You can even arrange the home-screen icons so that the ones you use most often are the most accessible.

Available features include quad-zone automatic climate control, a virtual gauge cluster (Audi's Virtual Cockpit), 16- and 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio systems, a 10.1-inch upper touch screen, and wireless device charging.

Standard driver assistance features include Audi Pre Sense Basic (prepares occupants for an imminent forward collision by tightening the seat belts and rolling up the windows), Pre Sense Front (includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection), front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

Available active safety features include a surround-view parking camera system, Audi Side Assist (blind spot monitoring), Pre Sense Rear (like Pre Sense Basic but for collisions from the rear), adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and vehicle exit warning, which helps you avoid opening your car door when traffic or a bicycle is approaching. Rear cross traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and intersection assistant are also available. Intersection assistant warns you if it detects cars approaching from the side as you move through an intersection.

  • "The system seems a little complicated at first, especially given the intuitive nature of the turn-and-click MMI system it replaces, but we quickly got used to its basic architecture and found it to be mostly smart and well thought out. Both touchscreens have haptic resistance that gives a positive click action and makes inputs more obvious than with a regular capacitive system. Many functions can also be controlled by voice input through a speech-recognition button on the steering wheel." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • "… the Audi’s slick virtual cockpit instrument display is matched by two center-stack displays, the upper one for infotainment, navigation and such, the lower one for climate control and other sundry functions. Both are haptic (with adjustable sensitivity) with audio confirmations; the lower one being particularly easy to interface with a finger because your wrist rests on the shifter. … The lower screen’s search-by-cursive-text-recognition is great (again, that steadied right wrist is crucial); its natural-language voice recognition is sourced by both onboard and cloud-based computing." -- Motor Trend (2019)
  • "While not perfect, I'm prepared to say that Audi's MMI is the best multi-touchscreen system I've yet experienced. It's very powerful, very crisp, configurable, low latency, and most importantly, it's surprisingly intuitive. You can drag-and-drop shortcut icons to organize screens as you wish, and you have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at your disposal if you'd rather go that route. … What I like best about MMI is that quite often, there are multiple ways to access the same function. … The system adapts to you, not the other way around, and makes it much easier to use." -- CNET (2019)

Cargo

The A7, which is actually a hatchback, has one of the largest cargo holds in the luxury large car class with 24.9 cubic feet of space. The standard split-folding rear seats give you more flexibility when you need to haul large items. A power liftgate comes standard.

  • "Underneath the A7's useful power-operated liftback, we fit seven carry-on bags behind its split-folding rear seat. The car also held 20 bags of luggage with the seats folded flat. Likewise, we managed to fit a golf bag and stroller in the cargo area." -- Car and Driver
  • "… with the rear seats down, [there's] enough space to place two golf bags sideways." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "And there's also gobs of cargo room … substantially more capacious than rivals like today's Mercedes-Benz CLS and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. Indeed, [measurements are] more than longer, class-above sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S450 4Matic, and Audi's own 2019 A8 sedan." -- CNET (2019)
