2016 Audi A7 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2016 Audi A7 was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 8.6

The 2016 Audi A7 offers several hearty engines that testers say deliver copious amounts of power and vigorous acceleration. Most agree that the A7 is a nimble vehicle and offers a supple ride as well.

  • "We've long been fans of the silky-smooth Audi 3.0T and combined with a slight recalibration of the car's Quattro all-wheel drive system, it feels sharper than before." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "We've praised the A7's competent chassis before, and it still impresses. From the light steering to the precise turn-in and the way its suspension shrugs off uneven surfaces, few cars can match it in spirited driving." -- Car and Driver
  • "Yet swiftness isn't the A7's sole trait. Comfort and composure are equally impressive, and the car's very manners can be tailored for performance or relaxation via Audi Drive Select feature." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Beneath the surface, the A7 is a well-engineered sedan that is excellent to drive." -- Edmunds (2015)

Acceleration and Power

The 2016 A7 features a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that puts out 333 horsepower. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The A7 gets an EPA-estimated 20/30 mpg city/highway, which is above average for the class and an improvement over the fuel economy of the 2015 model.

The high-performance S7 model comes standard with a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produces 450 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Audi lists the S7's top speed as 155 mph and says it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The RS7 model features a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that puts out 560 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RS7 goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 174 mph.

Test drivers say the base engine delivers robust power and seamless acceleration. They add that power delivery is strong even at highway speeds. The S7 and RS7 are even more potent, they report. The eight-speed transmission earns positive reviews for its smooth operation.

  • "Even in 'base' form with a 333-horsepower supercharged V6, the A7 has abundant power that's proved in a 0-60-mph time of 5.2 seconds. Acceleration is smooth and brisk, and power is available at almost any velocity. … For buyers who somehow require more gusto, the S7 provides it with a 450-horsepower twin-turbo V8, while the RS 7 could be considered the ultimate sleeper with its 560-horsepower and 3.7-second 0-60-mph time." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Regardless of which powertrain you choose, the 2016 Audi A7 can pass slow-moving traffic in what seems like a blink of an eye." -- Edmunds
  • "The 3.0T engine is a fine choice, delivering strong and smooth acceleration virtually from idle to redline." -- AutoTrader
  • "While some may wish to see Audi pair a dual-clutch gearbox with this engine, the eight-speed Tiptronic automatic is responsive enough and no doubt smoother in day-to-day driving." -- Automobile Magazine

Handling and Braking

All-wheel drive is standard on all 2016 A7, S7 and RS7 models. S7 and RS7 models also feature an adjustable suspension that allows drivers to fine-tune ride firmness and performance. The A7's ride is smooth, according to test drivers, and many think that it delivers a sporty driving experience. Some critics say the all-wheel drive system adds confidence when cornering. Reviewers note that the steering is responsive but a bit light.

  • "Despite sharing most of its mechanicals with the A6, the A7 seems more athletic and composed through corners. The all-wheel-drive system sends 60 percent of its power to the rear wheels and 40 percent to the front wheels for a pleasing balance, although it can redistribute whenever necessary." -- AutoTrader
  • "The A7 is inherently smooth on the highway, while the performance-tuned RS 7 includes an adjustable suspension that makes it easy to optimize suspension response for ride or handling." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "A taut suspension and composed chassis give Audi's midsize line a sportier-than-average feel that's backed up by direct, if perhaps a little too light, electric power steering." -- Left Lane News (2014)
