2016 Audi A7 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Audi A7 was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.1

The 2016 Audi A7 impresses auto journalists thanks to its opulent cabin, which they say is quiet and replete with top-notch materials. They add that the seats offer plenty of legroom, though most agree that the sloping roofline limits rear-seat headroom. The infotainment system draws praise for its intuitive interface and useful touchpad controller. The A7 rates among the best in the class in cargo capacity.

  • "It's comfortable, too, and quiet. For 2016, the excellent cabin is further improved with an upgraded infotainment system and fresh décor." -- Car and Driver
  • "Beyond quality materials and sleek aesthetics, this Audi's interior boasts controls that literally feel good, such as knurled dials and a leather-trimmed steering wheel." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The A7's interior is thoughtfully designed and tightly constructed, with excellent materials quality. Subtle wood accents add to the premium feel, as does the comprehensive red backlighting at night." -- Edmunds
  • "Few automotive interiors are nicer than the A7's. Materials are superb, fit and finish are exemplary and practically every touched surface exudes class." -- AutoTrader

Seating

The 2016 A7 seats five, while the S7 and RS7 seat four. Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats and heated front seats are standard. Ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are available. Test drivers report that finding a comfortable driving position is easy and that legroom in both seating rows is good. However, they point out that the A7's coupe-like body style reduces available headroom in the rear seats and could cause discomfort for taller passengers.

  • "Our major gripe with the 2016 Audi A7 is that, as with virtually all similar 'four-door coupe' profiles, interior space -- most notably, headroom -- suffers. … While you'll be able to squeeze adults 5-feet-10 or taller in the rear seat of the A7 for short trips, it's not an ideal arrangement. It must be mentioned, however, that this is par for the four-door coupe course." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Thanks to the standard 8-way-power/4-way lumbar adjustment and power-operated steering-wheel adjustment, it's easy for drivers of various shapes and sizes to be comfortable." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Some rear headroom is sacrificed in the name of the A7's dapper lines, but at least Audi has tossed the puzzling two-passenger rear setup for the latest model year in favor of a conventional bench seat that adds space for a third rear passenger." -- Left Lane News
  • Fitting five passengers in the A7 won't be a problem, as long as they aren't very tall. Headroom up front is acceptable, but the sleek, sloping roof line limits rear headroom quite a bit. Legroom however, is adequate all around." -- Edmunds (2015)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Audi A7 include quad-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, Bluetooth, a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring and the MMI infotainment system, which is updated with a faster processor and data connection for 2016 and comes with an 8-inch display screen, voice recognition, navigation, two USB ports and a touchpad controller with handwriting recognition. Audi Connect, which provides a Wi-Fi hot spot and uses Google Earth data to update navigation maps, is also standard. Available features include a head-up display, a 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, a night vision camera, a corner-view camera and forward collision warning with automatic braking.

Reviewers praise the updated MMI infotainment system for its smart menu layouts and sharp screen images. They add that it responds quickly to user inputs and takes little effort to master. The touchpad controller is a big hit with critics, and they especially like the handwriting recognition feature.

  • "On a positive note, changes to the MMI media interface are positive and the system seems a little snappier in operation." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "In total, MMI boasts logical menus and crisp graphics, and after a short time it seems relatively intuitive." -- Edmunds
  • "Remember handwriting recognition? Remember how cool it would've been had it worked right? Audi does, and it's done it with MMI Touch. Writing your letters and numbers on the touch-sensitive pad is far more effective, and a lot less gimmicky, than you might think." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Cargo

Unlike most luxury sedans, the 2016 A7 has a hatchback-style liftgate as opposed to a more traditional trunk. The A7 offers 24.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, which is excellent for the class. A hands-free power liftgate is standard. Automotive writers say that loading and unloading large items pose no challenge thanks to the wide hatchback-style rear door.

  • "Because of its hatchback configuration, the A7 provides easy access to its generously sized (24.5 cubic feet) cargo area." -- Left Lane News
  • "But perhaps the best news is that the Audi A7 is as practical as it is fun to drive, with a huge cargo area under the hatch." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "The A7's hatchback design enables easy loading of luggage and larger items that might not fit in the trunk of a conventional sedan. Official cargo capacity is 24.5 cubic feet, but lowering the rear seatbacks increases that volume significantly." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "The rear hatch opens up wide, making bulky objects easy to load and unload. The A7 is ideal for someone who, say, regularly drives a foursome to and from the golf course." -- Businessweek (2012)
