2021 Audi A6 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.4

The 2021 Audi A6 has a handsome cabin lined with soft leather surfaces and rich materials. Its trunk is small for the class, but it’s still a decent size. The seats have enough room for most adults to sit comfortably. Other than being a bit distracting to use while driving, the infotainment system works well.

  • "Audi has a knack for designing interiors that feel luxurious yet cutting-edge. That’s certainly the case in the 5-passenger Audi A6. Wood and leather materials are seamlessly interwoven with digital screens and controls that are literally among some of the best-feeling available." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The A6's interior design is sleek, modern, and nicely put together from excellent-quality materials. Soft leather adorns the seats and armrests, rich-looking wood and nickel-finished metal trim is tastefully applied to the dash and doors, and the majority of the A6's secondary controls – climate, drive mode, etc. – are handled by a large touch-sensitive panel underneath the main infotainment display." -- Car and Driver
  • "We clambered into a Euro-spec interior with full leather seats and wood trim that essentially matches what we get in the U.S. It’s tastefully done, with a mix of modern, business, and cozy." -- Motor Trend (2019)

Cargo

The A6 sedan has 13.7 cubic feet of trunk space, which is below average for a luxury midsize car, though there’s still enough room for several suitcases. A hands-free trunk lid and a power trunk lid are available. At the time of writing, Audi has not released cargo figures for the RS 6 Avant wagon.

Audi also offers a non-performance-oriented wagon called the A6 Allroad, which we review separately.

  • "A large trunk and easy-to-fold rear seatbacks make the A6 great for hauling cargo. We fit six of our carry-on suitcases in the trunk, which ties both the E450 and the 540i. The Audi offered far more space than either of those two with the rear seats folded, managing to hold 20 cases; the Benz held 18 and the BMW 16." -- Car and Driver
  • "The trunk offers space to accommodate ventures to the store, enough luggage for a road trip or a couple sets of golf clubs." -- CNET (2019)
  • "Trunk space is wider, and you can wave your foot to close the trunk lid when your arms are full." -- Motor Trend (2019)

Seating

This Audi seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery. Upgraded leather upholstery is available, as are a heated steering wheel, power soft-closing doors, and a power rear-window sunshade.

The heated and eight-way power-adjustable front seats are comfortable and supportive, and they can be upgraded to add ventilation and massaging functions, as well as 12- or 18-way power adjustments. The rear seats can be heated as well. Back-seat space is decent for average-sized adults.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. There’s also a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

  • "As long as they’re not especially tall and wide, four adults should be perfectly happy with the amount of space the vehicle provides." -- Autotrader
  • "The standard driver and passenger seats are comfortable, and upgraded variants are even better. Optional are excellent seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functionality. In back, passengers are treated to supportive seats and appreciable legroom." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Speaking of road noise, that’s another big change for the A6: It’s incredibly quiet on the open road … even with the engine online, the A6 is as quiet as a Buick, thanks largely to double-pane glass and improved door seals that block out wind and road noise." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)

Interior Features

The A6 comes standard with a dual-screen MMI infotainment system. The upper touch screen is 8.8 inches and controls most radio and sound functions. The lower screen is 8.6 inches and handles climate and other settings. Other standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, navigation, USB ports, Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker stereo.

The infotainment system uses haptic feedback. That means the displays respond to your touch with a light vibration so you know that your selection went through. The system works reasonably well, but some critics note that it can be distracting to operate it while driving.

Additional standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, and a panoramic sunroof.

Several features are optional. One is the Audi Virtual Cockpit, a configurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. It displays information such as navigation directly behind the steering wheel, which helps mitigate the need to look away from the road. Also available are a 10.1-inch upper touch screen, a 16- or 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, wireless device charging, and quad-zone automatic climate control.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, Audi Pre Sense Front (forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking), and Audi Pre Sense Basic, which rolls up the windows and tightens the seat belts if sensors detect an imminent collision.

Available driver aids include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a night-vision camera, a surround-view parking camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, intersection assist, traffic sign recognition, and a head-up display.

  • "… despite our usual griping about the takeover of touchscreen controls, it works well and provides satisfying haptic feedback." -- Car and Driver
  • "In the center of the dash, Audi’s Multi-Media Interface (MMI) Touch Response system presents all primary controls through haptic-feedback, touch-sensing display screens. … While the technology works fine, and the handwriting-recognition pad deciphers sloppy printing amazingly well, the previous Audi MMI rotary dial controller was much easier to use than the haptic screens. In our experience, the new approach creates more distraction and requires more glances away from the road." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Our fears that the Audi system would be as clumsy as other entertainment systems that rely on touch-sensitive controls are immediately dismissed. The system works quickly and emits sounds similar to the satisfying clicks made by the old control knob. The response time is very good, and the high-resolution screens and large icons make it a breeze to navigate. In one stroke, Audi has made the now-ubiquitous control knob old hat." -- Edmunds (2019)
