2020 Audi A6 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 8.1

The 2020 Audi A6 delivers good all-around performance. It handles well and rides smoothly, and you can pick the best engine to suit your driving style. The base turbo-four gets solid mpg ratings, while the available V6 is more energetic and provides quicker acceleration. The all-new S6 and RS 6 Avant models are high-performance variants with incredibly powerful engines.

  • "The A6 is more nimble than its predecessor. … This is a versatile car, asked to be many things to many people. Our first drive shows it is up to the task." -- Motor Trend (2019)
  • "Out on the road, the 2019 A6 continues in the finest German tradition of being a highway-crushing business sedan. Progress is swift and quiet at all speeds thanks to ample thrust from the muted turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, which makes 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, all-wheel drive is standard, and the system does well to put that power to good use through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The bends in the Douro valley roads we drove had us loving the 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, but also wishing that the 'dynamic' mode were a bit more, well, dynamic. When preparing for corner entry and exit, for example, we were looking for the transmission to drop down another gear or two. Instead we ended up pushing more into the accelerator on corner exit to trigger downshifts; by the time all that had happened we were heading into another tight corner, losing the opportunity to build speed on any small straights encountered. It’s a testament to the monstrous engine that you can even pull that trick off, though." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Acceleration and Power

The A6 comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard. A turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine is available. It produces 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

The base engine will suffice for most drivers. It moves the car easily enough around town and on the highway. That said, the V6 makes the car much more enjoyable thanks to the significantly quicker acceleration it delivers. The smooth-shifting transmission pairs well with each engine.

The high-performance S6 model features a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that puts out 444 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. The even-higher-performance RS 6 Avant has the most potent engine in the lineup: a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that puts out 592 horses and 590 pound-feet of torque. Audi claims the Avant will go from zero to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.

According to EPA estimates, the A6 gets 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway when equipped with its base engine.

  • "The V6 had no problem with the steep hills; after the obligatory pause for the turbo to wake up, the engine delivers a broad brand of largely silent thrust. Upshifts and downshifts are prompt and smooth, even at take-off—so much so that I had to double-check the spec sheet to verify that this was, indeed, a twin-clutch transmission and not a traditional torque-converter automatic." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)
  • "This one, the V6, is for people who like to flex their right ankles. The engine is the most exciting thing about the new car—as it should be—providing instantaneous thrust thanks to a torque curve that’s more of a flat line once you crack the throttle. It’s eager to rev throughout its powerband, and the dual-clutch gearbox snaps off shifts like a drummer playing rimshots. The turbo engine may lack some of the character of the supercharged V6 it replaces, particularly in the A6, where the exhaust sound is absolutely smothered, but it shames the old engine in power and flexibility." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • "Power can surge a bit when you stomp on the gas at lower speeds, but it is a nice, smooth delivery at higher speeds." -- Motor Trend (2019)

Handling and Braking

Ride quality is a definite strength of the A6. Its suspension absorbs road imperfections with ease, giving you a smooth cruise almost all the time. This Audi handles fairly well also. It's no sports car, but it's composed and capable on winding roads, leaving you feeling in control. All-wheel drive comes standard in the A6.

  • "Despite its impressive cornering ability and steady ride, the A6 performs better as a luxury sedan than a sports sedan. We enjoyed its balanced handling and precise steering but never felt totally engaged when attacking twisty sections of road." -- Car and Driver
  • "The chassis has good composure, even in quick transitions, and the A6 is capable of surprising pace along tight and technical roads. The steel springs did well to balance feel, control and comfort over a variety of surfaces, so we're curious how the optional sport variant will fare." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Unfortunately, Audi's light steering tune remains, with hardly any weight on center, even in the Dynamic setting. … Ride quality over bumps is cushy with the standard steel-spring setup; all US models will use this, in addition to a sport suspension that lowers the ride height slightly." -- CNET (2019)
