2014 Audi A6 Overview

Is the 2014 Audi A6 a Good Used Car?

This German sports sedan offers a high-quality interior, impressive fuel economy, and an even balance between ride comfort and handling ability. The Audi A6 is worth buying, but make sure you check out its competitors as well.

Although the A6’s optional engines provide plenty of power, its base engine disappoints. Output ranges from 220 horsepower in the 2.0T Premium trim to 420 horsepower in the S6. A continuously variable (automatic) transmission comes in 2.0T models. An eight-speed automatic comes with other models. Fuel economy ranges from 17-25 mpg in the city to 27-33 mpg on the highway, which is good for the class. A turbodiesel engine comes with TDI models (though sales are limited, following issues related to the Volkswagen emission scandal). The A6 maintains an even focus between a supple ride and sharp handling. However, its steering isn’t as responsive as some other luxury midsize cars. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but quattro models have all-wheel drive.

Inside, the A6 features high-quality materials and a sleek design. It comes standard with seating for five, leather upholstery, driver’s seat memory, and heated and power-adjustable front seats. Some models come with ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. The front seats are comfortable, even for taller drivers. There’s plenty of room in the back seats, but they are mounted too low for optimal comfort. The A6 is one of the best luxury midsize cars for installing child seats. It comes with two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the rear outboard seats and a tether-only connection in the middle seat.

Tri-zone automatic climate control and a sunroof come standard. The included MMI infotainment system works well, but some rival systems are easier to use. It comes with a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, and Bluetooth phone connectivity. If you’re a music lover, look for models with either the Bose 14-speaker or Bang & Olufsen 15-speaker audio systems. Navigation comes in Premium Plus trims and higher, but its graphics aren’t as crisp as other systems on the market.

Should I Consider Another Used A6?

The fourth generation of the Audi A6 began with the 2012 model year and continues through 2017. You may find a lower price on a model that’s a couple years older, but you’ll miss some updates. For 2013, Audi reintroduced the performance-tuned S6 model. The 2014 A6 gets standard heated front seats and a more powerful base engine.

Which Used Audi A6 Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Audi A6 comes in four trims: Premium, Premium Plus, Prestige, and the performance-oriented S6. Also, there are four powertrains: 2.0T, 3.0T, TDI, and 4.0T. The 2.0 Premium has lackluster acceleration, making the 3.0T Premium Plus a better choice. It comes with a 310-horsepower six-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. It also comes with added features like navigation, voice commands, handwriting recognition, a 7-inch driver-information color display, Bluetooth for streaming audio, push-button start, and a proximity key.

A certified pre-owned Audi A6 might cost you more, but you'll get some added protection. Audi CPO vehicles receive the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, then enjoy an additional two-year/50,000-mile comprehensive warranty. The two warranties differ in important ways, and there may be additional services like roadside assistance, so read the Audi warranty page carefully. Audi CPO models must pass an inspection covering 300-plus points.

2014 Audi A6 and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Audi A6 or 2014 BMW 5 Series?

Although a BMW 5 Series will likely cost you more, it’s a better car than the A6. In most cases, a 5 Series model has more power than a comparable A6. Both vehicles tout a comfortable ride, but the A6 feels more agile. The 5 Series makes up for that with its interior. It comes standard with an easy-to-use iDrive infotainment system and features that don’t come standard in the A6, like navigation and Bluetooth streaming audio. The 5 Series’ seats are spacious and comfortable, and its back seats are more comfortable than those in the A6. If you need lots of cargo space, the 5 Series Gran Turismo gives you 60 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Which Is Better: 2014 Audi A6 or 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a great choice for those who prioritize a smooth ride over razor-sharp handling. It doesn’t feel quite as agile as the A6. The E-Class doesn’t have as much standard horsepower as the Audi, but its high-performance Mercedes-AMG model outmatches the S6’s output. Unlike the A6, the E-Class has one of the best reliability ratings in the class. Though both German sedans have a high-quality interior, the E-Class’ feels roomier and offers more cargo space. Also, the E-Class’ wagon body style has up to 57.4 cubic feet of cargo space.
