2013 Audi A6 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2013 Audi A6 was new.

Interior: 8.3

Audi has a reputation for crafting the best interiors in the business, and the 2013 Audi A6 is no exception. Reviewers say the A6 features an attractively designed interior that uses premium soft-touch materials. Walnut wood trim is standard in the A6, while aluminum, ash and oak inlays are optional.

  • "Materials and overall design impress from a visual and tactile standpoint. The available ash-wood trim makes the cabin feel warm and inviting while the aluminum adds a sporty flair." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The 2013 Audi A6 offers one of the finest cabins in its class, with an attractive dash layout, excellent materials quality and solid fit and finish." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2013 Audi A6 boasts not only our favorite interior in the segment, but one of the finest passenger cabins money can buy: an unmatched mix of contemporary design, high-quality materials and impeccable build quality." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Materials so soft you could use them for a pillow. One of the best analog/digital instrument panel executions we've ever seen. Walnut wood inlays and Bang & Olufsen speaker covers that are borderline works of art." -- Motor Trend (2012)

The 2013 A6 garners good reviewers for its spacious, comfortable front seats, although one test driver comments that the center-rear seating position looks pretty unwelcome. Leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats are standard, while options and features available in higher trims include heated front seats, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

  • "Tall drivers and passengers benefit from the A6's long seat tracks. The standard seat position is fairly low, and raising the seats quickly shrinks headroom." -- Consumer Guide
  • "All the seats are supportive and comfortable on long trips, while the backseat in particular offers more real-world legroom than most rivals." -- Edmunds
  • "The front seats are supportive for long-distances, but they lack lateral support for spirited motoring around mountain curves. In back, there are seatbelts for three, but the A6 should be thought of as a four-passenger sedan. The center-rear position is so compromised as to be useless for anything but emergencies." -- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (2012)
  • "The comfortable front seats include adjustment for seat-cushion length and four-way movable head restraints. In the rear, even six-foot passengers have adequate headroom under the sloping roof, but the seat cushion is low. Knee clearance is good, and foot room is adequate." -- Automobile Magazine (2012)

Interior Features

The 2013 Audi A6 comes standard with a sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button start and Audi’s MMI infotainment system, which includes a 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, satellite radio and an iPod interface. Options and features available in higher trims include Bose or Bang & Olufsen audio systems, quad-zone automatic climate control, a backup camera with parking sensors, adaptive cruise control and a blind spot monitoring system. A navigation system with Audi Connect is also available. Audi Connect turns the A6 into a wireless hot spot, supporting up to eight Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Additionally, the navigation system can use the Internet connection to display Google Earth views instead of the usual maps.

Although one test driver writes that Audi’s MMI infotainment system is difficult to use, other reviewers say that the system is intuitive. One critic notes that MMI isn’t quite as easy to use as the COMAND system found in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

  • "MMI takes much longer to master than other ‘all-in-one’ control interfaces. The navigation system includes data and views from Google Earth, but some testers found its display too fuzzy for best legibility than the standard map." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The MMI (Multi Media Interface) controls entertainment, communication and navigation functions via the dash-mounted pop-up screen and a knob and buttons on the center console. The system boasts logical menus, crisp graphics and a touchpad to increase functionality, although we still prefer Mercedes' COMAND for overall usefulness." -- Edmunds
  • "The center console-mounted volume knob, placed conveniently adjacent to the main MMI (Multi Media Interface) control, remains a favorite small touch." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The highly styled and quiet-riding sedan offers so much technology that becoming familiar with all the features takes hours behind the wheel. Thankfully, the improved MMI control makes it easy to navigate most of the options." -- Popular Mechanics (2012)

With 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space, the 2013 Audi A6 has less trunk space than other luxury large cars. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Infiniti M offer 15.9 and 14.9 cubic feet for cargo, respectively. One reviewer says that the A6 offers useful trunk space and a low liftover height, as well as tie downs and hooks to secure your cargo. Another critic thinks that the trunk is small, but notes that the A6’s rear seats fold to increase cargo room.

  • "The trunk is roomy by absolute standards, but its usefulness is hurt by a somewhat narrow opening. We appreciate the fact that Audi includes strut-type lid hinges and spilt-folding rear seat backs as standard. Ditto the bag hooks, cargo tiedowns, and bumper-level load floor." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The A6's 14.1-cubic-foot trunk is on the small side, though the rear seat folds and features a pass-through when more space is needed." -- Edmunds
  • "Though middling sized, the trunk has a big opening." -- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (2012)
