2011 Audi A6 Review

The 2011 Audi A6 is a solid luxury sedan with good crash test scores, fun-to-drive performance and an upscale interior, but a complex infotainment system holds the A6 back.

Pros & Cons

  • Solid safety scores
  • Excellent handling with Quattro all-wheel drive
  • Supercharged V6 offers good power and fuel economy
  • High-quality interior
  • Audi’s multimedia system can be hard to learn

2011 Audi A6 Overview

When it was new, reviewers raved about the 2011 Audi A6’s balanced performance, especially its sharp steering and firm, yet comfortable ride. The A6 offers engines ranging from a normally-aspirated V6 to a V8. However, test drivers thought that the middle engine, a supercharged V6, offers excellent power without sacrificing much fuel economy.

The A6 handles well when equipped with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system, but without it, reviewers thought the A6 was just average. Still, the base front-wheel drive model earns fantastic fuel economy for the class at 21/30 mpg city/highway. The A6 performed admirably in crash tests, but several large luxury cars have better scores.

The A6 boasts a well-executed, modern interior that reviewers liked when it was new. Test drivers felt that the A6’s material quality was refined and that seating comfort was good in all spots. Auto critics especially liked the front seats, which they thought were easy to adjust and well-bolstered. When it was new, reviewers had mixed opinions on Audi’s Multi-Media Interface (MMI) system, which controls things like navigation and audio functions. Some found that the system was not intuitive and difficult to learn, while others felt that it was functional and easier to use than BMW’s iDrive system.

The base 2011 Audi A6 Premium comes standard with a sunroof, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, Bluetooth, navigation, satellite radio and an iPod interface. The Premium Plus trim adds larger wheels, parking sensors and auto-dimming mirrors to the list of standard equipment. The top-of-the-line Prestige trim includes all these, plus push-button start, a backup camera and an upgraded stereo.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 BMW 5-Series is worth a look for its good performance and solid safety scores. The base 5-Series gets slightly better fuel economy, but the A6 has better interior quality. Both have comparable safety scores.

If you’re looking for a good all-around large luxury sedan, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class should be on your list. The E-class has better safety scores than the A6, and reviewers agreed it has a nicer interior as well. Both cars have comparable cargo space, but the A6 has slightly better fuel economy.
