2008 Audi A6 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2008 Audi A6 was new.

Performance: 8.5

Reviewers agree that the 2008 Audi A6 performs remarkably, offering a quiet cabin experience, smooth and peppy acceleration, sure turning and excellent braking.

Kelley Blue Book finds the A6 delivers "supreme confidence" in performance, on both expressways and winding roads.

The A6 is praised for its performance delivery and confident handling. The A6 has "marvelous driveability," exclaims U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman. The base level V6 engine is "smooth," and the V8 is hailed as "one of the most brash in the class," Newman adds. New Car Test Drive reports that the A6 is "among the best in class in comfort and near or at the top of class in handling." The A6 V8 is hailed as "remarkably quick" by Kelley Blue Book.

Power and Handling

The A6 baseline model comes with a 3.2 liter V6 engine. The A6 also comes in a 4.2 liter V8 option. The A6 baseline has a 3.2 FSI Quattro, a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® for quattro all-wheel drive. The A6 4.2 FSI quattro has a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® for quattro all-wheel drive. Road and Track finds the A6 3.2-liter V6 engine to pull "authoritatively." Edmunds credits the direct fuel-injection technology of the A6 to "optimize performance." The A6 3.2 front wheel drive sedan, with a continuously variable transmission, is a little short on low-end torque, but performs with authority through the midrange, states Edmunds. The A6 V6 engine has an EPA mileage of 18 mpg during city driving and 27 during highway driving.

The A6 V8 engine is "smooth and potent," concludes Edmunds. While Motor Week calls the V8 engine gearbox "very refined," with the manual shift modes responding instantly. When manually shifting with the 6-speed Tiptronic transmission, the Audi A6 "claws it's way to a very impressive 0-60 mph time of about 6 seconds," adds Automobile.com.

Both engines, which feature direct fuel-injection technology optimizes performance and efficiency via "ultra-precise fuel delivery." Kelley Blue Book notes that you'll have to pay a premium for the A6 V8, at both the dealership and the gas pump, since the A6 requires premium fuel.

Handling and Braking

A majority of reviews praised the A6's authoritative handling and accurate feels, especially noting the optional adaptive suspension or the firm sport-tuned suspension offered in the S line package. The A6 is "incredibly confidence-inspiring because it goes where you point it, period," states Automobile Magazine. Cars.com calls the A6's handling "Confident" adding that the "taut suspension reacts promptly but not excessively. It can cope with most road roughness, but the ride can become bouncy through harsher stretches." Reviewers from Edmunds agree, adding that the A6 "handles impeccably but the steering feels a bit lifeless smooth."

In contrast to consensus, a vocal minority find the ride a bit uncomfortable. Kelley Blue Book finds the overall experience "a little short of serene," mainly due to a bouncy ride.

The 2008 Audi A6 has a conventional steel suspension, with an optional adaptive suspension or a sport version of the steel suspension that is offered in the S line optional package. The adaptive air suspension, for an extra cost, can do all the work for you automatically or can be adjusted by the driver. "On the relative smoothness of a local highway the automatic setting automatically lowers the car for better road holding and fuel economy," claims Automobile.com. With a quick turn of the Multi Media Interface, firm suspension can switch over to relaxed "to soak up bumps and pavement irregularities without being too floaty," quotes Automobile.com. The adaptive air suspension "optimizes road holding and comfort," states New Car Test Drive. "It's a marvelous invention that really helps keep the car securely fastened to the ground."

The S line Package, optional for the A6, comes equipped with a sport-tuned suspension that auto writers from Cars.com find "wonderfully smooth on pavement." With less than perfect road conditions, the S line package can transmit potholes and bumps but exhibits little body roll in corners.

The A6 is equipped with an Anti-Lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution, Electronic Differential Lock and the traction control system (ASR), which are all tied into the Audi Electronic Stability Program. The brakes, "as would be expected, stop the large luxo-sedan quickly and without drama. Pedal feel is excellent," reports Automobile.com. Consumer Guide agrees, stating that the brakes "deliver smooth, short stops." New Car Test Drive finds the braking "excellent," "whether or dry pavement or hurtling through a torrent of rain."

All Wheel Drive

Auto writers find the Quattro all-wheel drive noteworthy, adding extra confidence in bad weather. Edmunds states that the Quattro system "affords it prodigious grip around turns that makes spirited driving that much more fun, while providing all-weather capability." The Arizona Republic states that the quattro all-wheel drive system adds "an impressive level of traction and cornering control," adding to the A6's drivability with electronic stability control, speed-sensitive steering and anti-lock brakes with brake assist. They further say that the Quattro system pleased them by "performing flawlessly."
