Buying Advice

Last Updated: January 24, 2020

Strong, but Cooling Sales: The A5 sold in the top quarter of the luxury small car segment, behind popular competitors like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series. However, demand cooled over the course of 2019 as dealerships moved 11.4 percent fewer A5 models compared to 2018. It’s stablemate, the Audi A4 sedan, outsold the A5 by about 25 percent last year.

High Prices: A base A5 Sportback starts at $44,200, which is high when compared to the majority of the class. However, when compared to similar rivals – like the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe ($44,750) – its price is competitive.

Time to Buy: Even though sales lost some momentum, high starting prices mean you will likely still pay more for the A5 than other options in the segment. If you want to spend less, check out the highly-ranked A4 sedan instead. Though you lose some versatility of the A5’s sportback design, you end up with essentially the same car for nearly $7,000 less. This month's Audi deals can help you find even more savings. If you really want the sportback design, consider the Kia Stinger, which starts about $11,200 below the A5 and is still highly ranked in the segment. This month's Kia deals may help you find additional savings.
