2019 Audi A5 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.9

The 2019 Audi A5 has an elegant cabin with premium materials and a solid build quality. The front seats are well-appointed, while the second row has a mediocre amount of space. Trunk space is below-average in coupe and convertible models, but the Sportback offers a lot more room. The A5 has a long list of standard and available features, and the infotainment system is generally easy to use.

  • "The A5 Sportback's cabin isn't as plush as some might expect from a luxury brand, but all of the materials are high quality, the fit and finish is superb, and there are enough high-end features to distance it from mainstream sedans." -- Car and Driver
  • "Like the exterior, the cabin is an exercise in restraint and good taste, although the plethora of info screens brings some redundancy." -- Automobile Magazine (2018)
  • "The rest of the A5 and S5 interior is typical Audi. The simple and intuitive layout isn't taken to the extreme as in the TT and as a result comes off as more classy, less sterile." -- Motor Trend (2018)

Seating

Audi A5 Sportback models seat five people, and coupe and convertible models seat four. Leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats are standard. Upholstery options include Milano leather, Nappa leather, or a combination of leather and Alcantara. Front sport seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and 10-way power-adjustable front seats are also optional. The A5 has two complete sets of rear-seat LATCH connections, and all anchors are easy to access and use.

The A5's front seats are comfortable and supportive, with plenty of side bolstering. The rear seats are on the smaller side in all models, and the Sportback's sloping roof cuts into headroom.

  • "Rear-seat passenger space isn't as generous as in the Audi A4 sedan, but it's spacious enough for two average-size adults—and for the slight sacrifice in rear headroom, you get the A5 Sportback's sleek roofline, which is far sexier than that of its more angular and upright sibling." -- Car and Driver
  • "In any case, there are functional improvements, too. Audi reps point out that compared to the two-door A5/S5, the Sportback twins have 0.4 inches more front headroom, 0.9 inches more rear headroom, and second-row legroom that's better by 2.4 inches." -- CNET (2018)
  • "Both the Audi S5 coupe and convertible have seating for four instead of the five found in the A4 and S4, and the two rear seats aren't much to boast about. Most adults will be cramped, and just getting in and out of the rear seats in the coupe can be an exercise in agility. Thankfully the front seats are sublime." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features include three-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, push-button start, and a 7-inch digital driver information display. The standard MMI infotainment system features a 7-inch display screen, two USB ports, Bluetooth, a 10-speaker stereo, HD Radio, voice command activation, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The base model also comes with a rearview camera, Audi Pre Sense Basic, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking.

Optional features include proximity keyless entry, satellite radio, a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display, an 8.3-inch infotainment display, wireless device charging, navigation, MMI Touch handwriting recognition, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Available driver assistance features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, Audi Pre Sense Rear, vehicle exit warning, front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, stop-and-go traffic jam assist, automatic parking assist, a surround-view parking camera, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, turn assist, and collision avoidance assist.

The MMI infotainment system uses a rotary knob on the center console instead of a touch screen, and it’s fairly straightforward and easy to use. Reviewers also praised the optional Virtual Cockpit display for its high-tech appearance and function.

  • "Audi's MMI interface is easy to use while on the go, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard if users prefer to interact directly with their smartphones instead." -- Car and Driver
  • "Audi's fully digital dash has been around a few years now, but it still wows us. This optional setup replaces the traditional instrument cluster with a configurable 12.3-inch digital display. When integrated with Google Earth satellite mapping, it dazzles and seems straight from the future." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "An MMI infotainment system with 7.0-inch central screen comes standard, but an 8.3-inch display with higher resolution is available with navigation and handwriting recognition capability on the control knob. Audi's Virtual Cockpit instrument screen is available for both the A5 and S5, and it looks just as impressive here as it does in the rest of the lineup." -- Motor Trend (2018)

Cargo

The 2019 Audi A5 coupe has 11.6 cubic feet of trunk space, which is below average for the luxury small car class. The A5 convertible has 9.3 cubic feet of space. With the A5 Sportback, you get 21.8 cubic feet with the second row upright, and 35 cubic feet with the back seat folded down. A power trunk is standard and hands-free trunk access is optional.

  • "A hatchback in disguise, the A5 Sportback has a sloping rear roofline that hides a power-operated liftgate and a large cargo hold, making it far more practical than the Audi A4 sedan or the A5 coupe and convertible. It proved its mettle in our carry-on suitcase testing by swallowing 16 cases." -- Car and Driver
  • "There also is nearly twice the cargo capacity in the sportback, which offers 21.8 cubic-feet of storage behind the second row compared to 11.6 cubic-feet in the two-door models. With the rear seats folded down, the area opens up to 35.0 cubic-feet, creating an impressive cavern for more stuff, or to take a quick nap if you are so inclined." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "A glimpse of the cargo area with the rear seats folded down proves the car is anything but small on the inside: The A5 serves up 35 cubic feet of cargo room with the seats down, and a still-respectable 21.8 cubic feet with the seats in this upright and locked positions, with the generous hatch opening being far more cargo-friendly." -- Autoweek (2018)
