2019 Audi A5 Performance Review

Performance: 8.7

The 2019 Audi A5 has a potent base engine and two higher-performance models with even livelier powertrains. The base A5 also gets great fuel economy for the class. Handling is sporty, and the ride is comfortable.

  • "The new Audi A5, the S5's lesser sibling, already has an excellent blend of power, dynamics and everyday drivability. In the S5, the performance equation gets a serious boost, all without sacrificing comfort. The ... Audi S5 is the automotive equivalent of having your cake and eating it, too." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The A5 and S5 can melt away miles on the autobahn, tear up a twisty road and even transport the family on occasion. More to the point, however, they are personal cars designed to be enjoyable for the driver everyday on every road. Cars like the … A5 and … S5 don't make you wait for the weekend drive or track day to be entertained behind the wheel; it's about the entire experience every day." -- Motor Trend (2018)
  • "Audi's new coupe demonstrates a willingness to go around corners, and quickly to boot, but it never quite feels like it wants to play in them. When the curves open up, long sweepers beckon deep prods of the loud pedal, even if the result isn't exactly a boisterous symphony. Unlike the exterior, the A5's on-road behavior is subtle, and if the steering feels light and a tad numb, the chassis still telegraphs what's happening down at the wheels with legitimate accuracy." -- Car and Driver (2018)

Acceleration and Power

The 2019 Audi A5 comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The A5 gets an estimated 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, which is above-average fuel economy for the class.

Audi S5 models feature a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission good for 349 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The S5 gets up to 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

The high-performance Audi RS 5 has a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine that produces 444 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it gets up to 18/27 mpg city/highway.

All of the engines throughout the A5 lineup boast ample power and potent acceleration. Both automatic transmissions deliver smooth and precise shifts.

  • "Smooth and sonorous, the engine provides effortless power while the transmission shifts gears quickly and seamlessly; it's a polished and well-matched setup made all the more capable by standard all-wheel drive." -- Car and Driver
  • "Audi's now familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four … was more than enough to get the car moving down the woodsy back roads outside of the city. The engine is backed by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that offers buttery-smooth gear changes and shift logic that always has you in the right gear. " -- Motor Trend (2018)
  • "Powering the car is Audi's ubiquitous 2.0-liter turbo-four. … We find this impressive, along with the 5.7-second 0 to 60 mph dash and 130-mhp top speed. And the turbocharger is as obsequious as a courtier. … An eight-speed automatic replaces the seven-speed and it is as dutiful and smooth as a skilled event planner - perhaps too smooth for this application, we wouldn't mind a fair whomp! every now and them." -- Automobile Magazine (2018)

Handling and Braking

The Audi A5 balances athletic handling with a comfortable ride. Steering is well-weighted and direct, and the car rides smoothly over bumps in the road. All A5 models and trims come standard with Quattro all-wheel drive.

  • "It's composed, confident, and easy to drive fast through corners: The A5 Sportback is everything a modern sports sedan should be. Its agility belies its comfort, too, and potholes and broken pavement do little to upset the Sportback, especially when it's equipped with the optional adaptive suspension. The well-weighted steering feels natural in the driver's hands, and the front tires respond immediately to driver inputs, making this Audi a joy to pilot on twisty tarmac." -- Car and Driver
  • "The A5 offers quick-enough reflexes in the corners and smooth cruising on the standard 18-inch wheels. The suspension soaks up the odd pavement cracks with an indifferent thump from the wide tires. … At speed the A5 keeps the road manners of in-town cruising, offering a slightly firm but well-damped ride that permits a bit of float, striking a good balance between sport and comfort." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • "This car, thanks in part to a torque-vectoring Sport Differential in back, turns in with authority and doesn't suffer from the understeer associated with the previous car. … As with every generation, Audi's all-wheel-drive system is better than before. The A5 and S5 won't be mistaken for rear-wheel drive-if they were, they wouldn't feel like Audis. The electric power steering has also taken a step forward, feeling quicker and more precise." -- Motor Trend (2018)
