2017 Audi A5 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2017 Audi A5 was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 8.2

The 2017 Audi A5 won't disappoint you with its performance, but it also may not impress you. The four-cylinder engine delivers adequate power, and the A5's handling is responsive. Standard all-wheel drive provides excellent road grip when cornering and a sure-footed feel during foul weather. The performance-oriented S5 features a V6 that has enough power to get your blood pumping, plus a sport-tuned suspension for better handling.

  • Performance is also merely average for the class, though still plenty capable when you consider that all-wheel drive is standard." -- Edmunds
  • "The experience of driving a 2016 Audi A5 or Audi S5 starts the moment you get inside and get comfortable. Whether you choose the fixed-roof A5 Coupe or drop-top A5 Cabriolet, all models reward you with excellent balance, poise and a comfortable ride." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • Overall, the A5 is a pleasure to drive; it's only the power deficit that holds it back." -- AutoTrader (2014)

Acceleration and Power

The A5 features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 220 horsepower. It isn't the most impressive engine around, but it delivers enough power to keep you engaged. In other words, it won't confine you to the right lane on the highway. With the automatic transmission, the A5 gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway – worse numbers than you'll find for many class rivals.

The high-performance S5 is the model for drivers who place a premium on power. It comes with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 333 horsepower. According to Audi, the S5 has a top speed of 155 mph and goes zero to 60 mph in under five seconds.

Both engines are paired with a six-speed manual transmission in coupe models. The A5 is available with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the S5 is available with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Cabriolet (convertible) models are not available with the manual transmission.

  • Power from the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is adequate, but not impressive. Drivers with a healthier appetite for performance would do well to check out the more powerful S5 model." -- Edmunds
  • "Though its turbocharged 4-cylinder engine isn't the fastest mill out there, it still can provide an invigorating driving experience." -- Consumer Guide
  • "It's a good day when the 'base' engine is the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that's standard in the Audi A5. With 220 smooth horsepower, standard quattro AWD, and your choice of a 6-speed automatic or an 8-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual control, it's no penalty box. However, we're particularly fond of the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 in the Audi S5, with its 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Handling and Braking

In the A5, you can feel more confident if you get caught in a storm thanks to standard all-wheel drive. You'll also have a more sure-footed grip if you take advantage of the A5's agile handling. An available sport suspension further improves handling, and the S5 comes with its own sport suspension that is better-equipped to let you take full advantage of its powerful engine. The A5 rides comfortably. The sportier suspensions do lead to a firmer ride, but not so much that you'll complain.

  • "The 2017 Audi A5 instills cornering confidence with its well-tuned suspension and standard all-wheel drive. Whether it's a rain-slicked road or a challenging mountain switchback, the sleek coupe tracks predictably flat right where the driver intends. Adding the optional Sport package firms up the ride somewhat, but not at the expense of ride comfort." -- Edmunds
  • "The A5 boasts responsive handling thanks to an engine placement behind the front wheels, resulting in better weight distribution than any existing Audi (aside from the mid-engine R8)." -- Left Lane News
  • "Ride, handling, braking, steering and over-the-road manners are everything you might expect, and Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) makes short work of inclement weather." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
