2017 Audi A5 Overview

Is the 2017 Audi A5 a Good Used Car?

The 2017 Audi A5 is a decent used luxury small car, but only for certain buyers. In a class full of sedans, the A5 is available only as a two-door coupe or a two-door cabriolet (convertible). Most competitors have standard front- or rear-wheel drive; the A5 comes with all-wheel drive – a plus if you regularly drive in poor weather.

Other A5 traits are less attractive. While the A5 features a rich cabin with comfortable front seats, its lacks several key standard features, such a USB port, a rearview camera, and a touch-screen infotainment system. It also gets some of the lowest fuel economy ratings in the class.

The 2017 Audi A4 is in the same class as the A5, but it has four doors, good rear-seat space, and plenty of tech features. Chances are, you’ll pay considerably less for an A4. When both Audis were new, the A4’s base price was $6,300 lower than the A5’s.

How Much Does the 2017 Audi A5 Cost to Own?

The 2017 Audi A5’s five-year estimated costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs total to about $29,700. Most rivals have similar estimated costs, including the 2017 BMW 3 Series ($29,300) and 2017 Cadillac ATS ($30,400).

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Audi A5?

The fully redesigned 2018 Audi A5 starts at $42,800 for the coupe. For the 2018 model year, Audi also introduced the A5 Sportback four-door hatchback, which starts at $42,600.

A new 2018 model will probably cost you more than a used model, but you’ll get a much longer list of features with the newer model. Newly standard features for the 2018 A5 include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rearview camera, a 7-inch infotainment screen, and Pre Sense Basic and City, which uses radar and a camera to help prevent a collision at low and high speeds.

The A5 was due for some updates, and the 2018 model delivers on them. If it’s within your budget, choose the 2018 A5.

Which Model Year of the Audi A5 Is Best?

The 2017 Audi A5 is part of a generation that spans the 2008 through 2017 model years. The 2013 A5 received a significant refresh, and the 2014 A5 introduced a stronger base engine as well as standard Bluetooth and iPhone connectivity. Since then, there have been few changes. All-wheel drive became standard in the 2015 A5. This was also the last model to offer the performance-oriented RS 5 model with a 450-horsepower engine. The 2015 A5 offers a good balance of features and price. If you can do without all-wheel drive, consider the 2014 model to save even more.

What Does Audi's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Audi offers a certified pre-owned program for cars five years old or less and with fewer than 60,000 miles. Qualifying vehicles bought under the new-car warranty period have coverage until five years from the vehicle’s original in-service date, with no mileage limitation. Certified pre-owned Audis purchased after the four-year new-car warranty has ended receive an additional one-year/unlimited-mileage comprehensive warranty. This is not an extension of the new-car warranty. The two warranties differ in important ways, so read Audi’s warranty page carefully. Audi CPO models must pass a 300-plus-point inspection.

Among luxury car manufacturers, Audi’s CPO program is about average, according to our research. You’ll find better programs from Infiniti, Lexus, and Jaguar.

2017 Audi A5 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Audi A5 or 2017 Audi A4?

The 2017 Audi A4 is essentially a four-door sedan version of the 2017 A5. Audi totally redesigned the A4 in 2017 (the A5 was redesigned in 2018). Both cars feature first-class interiors, but the 2017 A4 comes with many more standard features, including a rearview camera, forward collision warning, HD radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 7-inch screen. The A4 also has more rear-seat and trunk space than either the A5 coupe or convertible. Overall, the A4 is the more practical car and a better value.

Which Is Better: 2017 Audi A5 or 2017 BMW 4 Series?

The 2017 BMW 4 Series is a sporty, fun-to-drive vehicle with agile handling and several powerful engines. BMW also offers a high-performance M4 model, which is quicker and more powerful than the Audi S5. The BMW's cabin is upscale, but it doesn’t look or feel quite as elegant as the Audi’s. However, the 4 Series has a larger trunk and roomier back seats. Fuel economy is slightly better in the BMW 4 Series. Its 430i coupe gets 1 more mpg in the city and 4 more mpg on the highway than the A5. Both vehicles are solid options, but the 4 Series offers a bit more for about the same price.

How Does the 2017 Audi A5 Drive?

The 2017 Audi A5 has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 220 horsepower. All-wheel drive (quattro) is standard. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual gearbox (coupe only) and an eight-speed automatic. With the base engine, the A5 has brisk acceleration, and it quickly climbs to highway speeds. The suspension delivers a smooth ride while keep the A5 composed around sharp turns.

The performance-oriented Audi S5 has a 333-horsepower supercharged V6 engine and all-wheel drive. It comes with either a six-speed manual transmission (coupe only) or seven-speed automatic. The S5’s V6 shows real gusto compared to the A5’s already strong base engine. A standard sport-tuned suspension gives the S5 extraordinary cornering agility, and an adaptive suspension is available.

Does the 2017 Audi A5 Get Good Gas Mileage?

With the automatic transmission, the A5 achieves 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. That’s below average for the class, but it isn’t surprising for a vehicle that has standard all-wheel drive. Fuel economy dips to 18/28 mpg city/highway for the S5.

How Many People Does the 2017 Audi A5 Seat?

The 2016 Audi A5 seats four in both coupe and cabriolet (convertible) models. The front seats are comfortable and offer good support, even on longer trips. The available sport seats offer excellent lateral support. However, the rear seats aren’t very welcoming, with tight head- and legroom. Leather upholstery is standard; heated seats are available.

Although the 2017 A5 is part of a generation that debuted nearly a decade ago, its cabin still radiates the elegance you would expect from a luxury vehicle. First-class materials abound, and just about every surface is covered in soft-touch materials.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Audi A5?

Both rear seats have full sets of LATCH hardware for attaching child safety seats.

2017 Audi A5 Features

The A5 has fewer standard and optional features than most competitors. Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, satellite radio, a 10-speaker audio system, iPod connectivity, a panoramic sunroof (coupe models), and the MMI infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display screen.

Available features include a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, Bluetooth audio streaming, HD Radio, Audi Connect with a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot, and an upgraded MMI infotainment system with navigation and a 7-inch display screen.

Most 2017 vehicle come with a USB port, including nonluxury vehicles. However, the A5 comes with an iPod cable, which severely limits the devices you can charge or connect to the infotainment system. The MMI infotainment controls are clearly labeled but can be awkward to use on the road, requiring more button presses than you might expect.
