2016 Audi A5 Review

The 2016 Audi A5 has an elegant cabin and balanced handling, but its cramped rear seats and dated tech features pull it down in a highly competitive class.

Pros & Cons

  • First-rate cabin materials
  • Composed, agile handling
  • Complicated infotainment system
  • Tight rear seats

2016 Audi A5 Overview

Is the 2016 Audi A5 a Good Used Car?

The 2016 Audi A5 is a decent option among used luxury small cars. Available in coupe and cabriolet body styles, the A5 offers a crisp interior and a smooth yet sporty ride. However, rivals like the BMW 4 Series offer a wider array of convenience and safety features, a higher reliability rating, and zestier performance.

Why You Can Trust Us

Our goal is to make shopping for your next car as easy as possible. You'll find everything you need to know about the Audi A5 in our comprehensive review. It combines concrete data (like fuel economy estimates, horsepower specs, and cargo space dimensions) with 57 professional Audi A5 reviews.

At U.S. News & World Report, we rank the Best Jobs, Best Hospitals, and Best Colleges to guide readers through some of life’s most complicated decisions. We've been ranking and reviewing the Best Cars since 2007, backed by a team with more than 75 years of combined automotive experience. To keep favoritism out of the picture, we maintain a separate advertising team and decline expensive gifts and trips from car companies.

How Much Is the 2016 Audi A5?

The average price of a 2016 A5 is $33,000. That’s pricier than most other rivals in the luxury small car class. However, you’re still likely to pay more for a 2016 BMW 4 Series ($35,400 on average) or a 2016 Lexus RC ($37,100 on average). Based on 70 listings on our used car site, the price of a 2016 A5 ranges from $26,500 to $41,500. The trim level, condition, and mileage of the vehicle are a few of the factors that impact a used car’s listing price.

How Much Does the 2016 Audi A5 Cost to Own?

You’ll want to budget approximately $6,200 a year ($31,100 over five years) for fuel, insurance, scheduled maintenance, and repair bills for a 2016 A5. These expenses are higher than many other luxury small cars (such as the 2016 Lexus RC), but similar to those of the 2016 Audi A4 and 2016 BMW 4-Series.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New A5?

Audi redesigned the A5 for the 2018 model year, and the outcome is brilliant. Both the new A5 and the performance-oriented S5 are more powerful than before, and they deliver dynamic road manners and comfortable accommodations. The interior also received some notable changes, including a much-improved infotainment system. The 2018 A5 earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it’s one of the top-scoring models among new luxury small cars.

We recommend that you test drive both the model years to see if the new generation is worth the higher price. With its starting MSRP of $42,800, the 2018 A5 costs almost $10,000 more than a 2016 (which has an average price of $33,000). For most shoppers, the 2016 A5 still represents a satisfying sports coupe, and is the better value.

A few brand new sports sedans have a similar starting price to the 2016 A5’s average price. Of these, the 2018 Kia Stinger ($31,900) is one of the best you can buy. This all-new luxury small car has all the right moves: athletic handling, enthusiastic engines, a high-class cabin, and loads of standard goodies. The 2018 Audi A3 ($31,950) is another appealing option. Though the 2018 A3 is 6.6 inches shorter than the 2016 A5, the smaller A3 actually offers more rear-seat space, and it even has a slightly larger trunk. We named the A3 the 2018 Best Luxury Small Car for the Money for its outstanding blend of value and quality.

2016 Audi A5 Recalls

Which Model Year of the Audi A5 Is Best?

The 2016 Audi A5 is part of a generation that spans the 2008 through 2017 model years. All-wheel drive became standard for 2015, and Audi discontinued the 450-horsepower RS 5 model for 2016. For the best value and a high overall score, look for a 2012, 2013, or 2015 A5 – these are expected to be more reliable than the other model years.

Which Used Audi A5 Model Is Right for Me?

The 2016 A5 coupe and A5 cabriolet (convertible) come in four trim levels: A5 Premium, A5 Premium Plus, S5 Premium Plus, and S5 Prestige. The A5 Premium is nicely equipped with a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and leather upholstery. Available features include proximity keyless entry and heated front seats.

We recommend the A5 Premium Plus. It adds both of above options – along with a Bang & Olufsen sound system – but typically costs only a few hundred dollars more than the base trim. The Audi S5 Premium Plus adds a sport-tuned suspension and updated exterior styling, in addition to its more powerful engine. The S5 Prestige trim adds adaptive headlights and the Technology package, which includes a 7-inch display, navigation, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, and parking sensors.

Navigation is available in all lower trim levels. A Comfort Seat package (cabriolet only) is available for Premium Plus and Prestige models. It adds heated and ventilated front seats with neck-level vents.

Certified Pre-Owned Audi A5 Warranty

You may also want to shop for a certified pre-owned A5. Audi CPO vehicles receive the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, then enjoy an additional two-year/50,000-mile comprehensive warranty. The two warranties differ in important ways, and there may be additional services like roadside assistance, so read the Audi warranty page carefully. Audi CPO models must pass an inspection covering 300-plus points. The model's original sale date determines whether it is eligible for the CPO program.

This coverage is comparable to certified pre-owned programs from BMW and Porsche. However, it’s not quite as comprehensive as what Lexus and Mercedes offer.

How Safe Is the A5?

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has published crash test results for the 2016 model year, which is common  among select high-end vehicles.

The A5 offers fewer advanced safety features than many of its rivals. Front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and blind spot monitoring are available in the Premium Plus and Prestige trim levels. Adaptive cruise control is available only in the S5 Prestige model.

2016 Audi A5 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2016 Audi A5 or 2016 BMW 4 Series?

The 2016 BMW 4 Series and Audi A5 both have classy interiors, and used models often have fairly similar price points. However, the BMW is the better pick. The 4 Series has higher fuel economy ratings, a bit more rear seat space, and advanced features that the A5 can’t match (including lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, and steering assist for parallel parking). The BMW also offers sportier handling than the Audi, as well as superior muscle with its M4 model.

Which Is Better: 2016 Audi A5 or 2016 Audi A4?

The Audi A4 sedan and two-door A5 share the same vehicle platform and many other attributes. Both sport posh interiors and the same four- and six-cylinder engines. However both also have the same dated infotainment system and limited active safety features. The used A4 is the better buy of the two. It offers a roomier back seat and a much lower average price.

Which Is Better: 2016 Audi A5 or 2016 Audi A6?

The A5 and the luxury midsize Audi A6 are cut from two different cloths. Both impress with confident handling and luxe interior trimmings, but the A6 sedan offers roomier rear seats, luxuries like massaging front seats, and advanced safety features like lane keep assist and forward collision warning with brake assist. The high-performance S6 model outguns the S5 with a 450-horsepower V8. The used A6 is the better luxury car. That said, it’s pricier than the A5.

2016 A5 Performance

How Does the 2016 Audi A5 Drive?

The 2016 Audi A5 has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 220 horsepower. All-wheel drive (Quattro) is standard; a six-speed manual transmission (coupe only) and an eight-speed automatic are available. The A5’s base engine hustles it up to speed briskly and offers ample passing power on the highway. The suspension delivers a smooth ride while remaining composed in tight corners.

True performance enthusiasts will want to opt for the S5. It has a supercharged, 333-horsepower V6 engine, all-wheel drive, and either a six-speed manual (coupe only) or seven-speed automatic transmission. The V6 feels more muscular and surges you up to speed. The S5’s sport-tuned suspension enhances cornering ability but reduces ride quality a bit. A smoother adaptive suspension is available.

Does the 2016 Audi A5 Get Good Gas Mileage?

The A5 achieves 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, which is good for the class. Fuel economy dips to 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway for the S5.

How Many People Does the 2016 A5 Seat?

The 2016 Audi A5 seats four in both coupe and cabriolet models. The front seats are comfortable and offer good support, even on longer trips. Available sport seats offer even better lateral support. The rear seats aren’t very welcoming, though. Head- and legroom are tight, so these seats are best for occasional use. Leather upholstery is standard; heated and ventilated front seats are available.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2016 Audi A5?

Each rear seat has a full set of LATCH hardware, which includes both lower and tether anchors.

2016 Audi A5 Features

The A5’s cabin impresses with its quality materials and clean, understated design. All A5 models come with a 6.5-inch display screen, an MMI infotainment system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a CD player. Available features include a larger 7-inch screen, navigation, Wi-Fi, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. Despite the elegant appearance, the MMI infotainment controls can be awkward to use on the go, requiring more button presses than expected. Cabriolet models have a power-retractable soft top, which operates quickly and provides good insulation from wind noise.
