2011 Audi A5 Overview

When it was new, critics liked the 2011 Audi A5, saying its cabin is classy and its suspension is firm, but not harsh. Based on the A4 sedan, the A5 is reasonably peppy, but probably won’t set any speed records. Those who want more power and speed might be happier with the Audi S5, which is reviewed separately. The convertible variant, known as the Cabriolet, has a soft roof, rather than the retractable hardtop found on some of its competitors.

The A5 is powered by a 211-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and critics said the A5 accelerates well, despite being less powerful than many rivals. The cabriolet comes with either front- or all-wheel drive, while the coupe is AWD-only. The coupe is the only configuration available with a manual transmission, and with it, the A5 earns a fuel economy rating of 21/31 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. All other variants get similar mileage. Those after the sportiest handling should look for an A5 equipped with the S-Line package, which adds a sport suspension. The coupe and convertible both offer about 12 cubic feet of trunk space. With the convertible top down, the A5 can still hold 10.2 cubic feet of cargo, which gives it an advantage over hardtop convertibles, whose roofs take up cargo space when lowered.

Critics liked the A5’s cabin, saying that it’s a comfortable, performance-oriented interior with good fit and finish. Most testers noted that the back seat is fairly cramped, but this is typical for coupes and convertibles. Standard equipment includes leather seats with front power adjustment, satellite radio and an auxiliary input jack. Upper trims add features like Bluetooth, heated front seats and three-zone climate control. Navigation, Audi’s Multi Media Interface infotainment system and a Bang & Olufsen stereo were optional when it was new.

Other Cars to Consider

Critics said the 2011 Infiniti G37 coupe and convertible have great performance, as well as an upscale interior. The G convertible is of the hardtop variety, so when it is stowed away, there is very little cargo space, but it also isolates you better from the elements in bad weather.

The 2011 BMW 3-Series is regarded by many critics as one of the benchmarks in the segment due to its agile handling and smooth, powerful engines. Like the Infiniti, the 3-Series convertible is a hardtop, so it has the same pros and cons. If you’re looking for a more engaging driving experience, reviewers agreed that the BMW is worth your consideration.
