2008 Audi A5 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2008 Audi A5 was new.

Interior: 8.0

Reviewers find the A5's interior cabin to be comfortable, luxurious, and constructed of high-quality materials. Altogether, it leaves critics with little to complain about.

  • "It has the features expected, good ergonomics, a central interface system that won't drive you to cursing, and it's all assembled to a high standard using appropriate materials." -- New Car Test Drive
  • "The cabin is furnished with high quality materials and has an alluring style that actually leans more toward sporty than luxurious, yet comfort and convenience are nicely accommodated throughout." -- Carseek
  • "As is typical with Audi, the quality of the materials is impressive. It's a classy driving environment--functional and comfortable, cool but not overstyled, comprehensively equipped and beautifully put together." -- Automobile Magazine

Test drivers are satisfied with the A5's four-seat configuration. Some, however, note that the rear seat won't leave adults comfortable for extended periods of time. Still, it's adequate enough for short trips.

  • "Thigh extensions in the seat cushions let those tall drivers use more chair than just the area under their pant pockets, and there's plenty of leg room and a good dead pedal." -- New Car Test Drive
  • "Front seats should accommodate all body types and sizes comfortably. Two adults will be happy in the rear for short to moderate-length trips, but three will be tight." -- Forbes
  • "The multiadjusting front seats offer all-day touring comfort and good support during spirited driving. The rear compartment offers seating for two, though taller folks will find under-thigh support and legroom somewhat lacking." -- Edmunds
  • "The rear seats actually accommodate adults, although headroom is a bit tight for six-plus footers." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "As with most of its competitors, the A5 won't be a prom-night enabler on account of its snug (although ergonomically correct) back seat." -- Car and Driver

Interior Features

Auto writers are pleased with the A5's long list of modern interior features, including Audi's Multi-Media Interface (MMI) system -- which consolidates a plethora of high-tech gadgetry into a simple-to-use interface.

  • "Inside, the new coupe is equally fetching, and it can be tailored to suit individual tastes with an impressive array of optional colors, fabrics, and textures that are attainable without cracking Audi Exclusive's custom-order book." -- Motor Trend
  • "...Audi assets include an expectedly handsome cabin filled with luxury features such as triple-zone climate control and finely finished leather and wood trim." -- Edmunds
  • "All of the instruments are logically laid out, and Audi's MMI operating system remains one of the most intuitive on the market." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The MMI system governs various functions - including the navigation system - with a central knob behind the gearshift. Thanks to more than a dozen shortcut buttons surrounding the knob, it's easier to use than BMW's similar iDrive, but uninitiated drivers may find it confusing." -- Cars.com
  • "A thick, three-spoke steering wheel feels perfectly sized and is easily adjustable thanks to its manual tilt and telescoping feature. The gear shifter is well placed, but is awkwardly tall with surprisingly long throws. An adjustable armrest alleviates the awkwardness of the shift lever's height, though not entirely." -- Forbes

The A5 provides 12 cubic feet of luggage space and features split 60/40-folding rear seatbacks to enlarge its cargo carrying versatility. Still, some reviewers take issue with its narrow trunk, which makes loading large items a nuisance.

  • "The separate trunk is quite generous, and the rear seatbacks can be folded down for even more cargo capacity." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The trunk has a good amount of space, but it's narrow and not very tall, which precludes hauling of bulky items. Split folding rear seatbacks are a nice convenience, though." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The A5 also has plenty of storage, from the compartments in the doors to the ones on the center console, which are perfect for a wallet or cell phone. Two cup holders in the front are big enough to fit huge lattes, but will obstruct the armrest." -- Forbes
