2019 Audi A4 Interior Review

Interior: 8.9

The 2019 Audi A4 has a premium cabin with high-quality materials. It’s full of cutting-edge technology, and the seats are spacious enough to comfortably hold adults, even in the back.

  • "The cabin space and quality of materials in all the trim levels are impressive." -- Autotrader
  • "Audi keeps setting new quality benchmarks for cabin materials and construction. The Mercedes C-Class might appear more luxurious, but a closer look gives the A4's better-made cabin an advantage." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Unlike the subtle exterior changes, the A4's interior makeover represents cutting-edge technology and modernism." -- New York Daily News (2017)

The base A4 seats five people on leather upholstery. Heated front seats with eight-way power adjustments come standard. Ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, front sport seats with extra power adjustments and support, and a heated steering wheel are available. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and this sedan can comfortably seat two adults in the rear. The A4 has two complete sets of LATCH connections for child car seats on the rear outboard seats, as well as a tether anchor on the rear middle seat.

  • "For a premium compact sedan, the 2019 A4 is not so compact. Audi's mainstay seller has grown over the generations, culminating in this version (that debuted for the 2017 model year) and has sufficient space for adults to be comfortable in the rear seats." -- Autotrader
  • "The optional sport seats are our favorite for the adjustable thigh support, but the standard seats are praiseworthy in their own right. Both are firmly padded and well shaped for hours of comfortable touring." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The cabin also shows attention to practicality. Thin window pillars all around make for good visibility, and the front seats have lots of legroom and knee space thanks to a low center console that retains its convenient height-adjustable armrest. The backseat, meanwhile, is downright generous for this class. Headroom and legroom are good, and the seat sits high enough off the floor for good thigh support." -- Cars.com (2017)

Interior Features

Audi outfits the A4 with a lot of standard features, including the MMI infotainment system, a 7-inch display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Bluetooth, a 10-speaker sound system, two USB ports, push-button start, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof. Standard safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera.

Optional equipment includes a head-up display, an 8.3-inch infotainment display, handwriting recognition, a navigation system, Audi's Virtual Cockpit, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 19-speaker premium Bose sound system, and proximity keyless entry. A few more driver aids are available, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams.

The straightforward standard infotainment system is controlled by a central knob on the center console. Models with handwriting recognition feature a touch-sensitive pad on the top of this control knob. Audi’s Virtual Cockpit draws a lot of praise. It replaces the traditional gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch customizable screen, making it easier to see car and infotainment information while you're driving.

  • "The Virtual Cockpit can show regular information like road and engine speeds, but it can also bring the navigation feature right in front of the driver instead of keeping it over to one side. It's easy to use and worth having if the budget allows." -- Autotrader
  • "The 2017 Audi A4 also employs a new 12.3-inch video screen in the center stack as a display for the latest MMI infotainment software. The rotary command wheel on the center console remains useful and easy to control, but the updates to the Audi Connect system take things to new heights. … We never once reached for our iPhones, despite the fact that the A4 has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built-in." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)
  • "Directly in front of the shifter is the aforementioned MMI knob. That top surface of the shifter just happens to be perfectly positioned to act as a wrist rest to steady your hand while manipulating the controller. I've long preferred these rotary control schemes to touchscreens in the automotive environment and this setup may well be the best yet." -- Forbes (2017)

This luxury sedan has a 13-cubic-foot trunk, which is typical for the class. The split-folding rear seats and wide trunk opening make it easy to load cargo.

  • "Trunk space is 13 cu ft. The A4's compatriots offer the same amount, which is good for about three sets of golf clubs." -- Autotrader
  • "In terms of size, the A4's cargo and storage is typical for the class, but the A4 gets additional consideration for the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats that allow for greater flexibility when transporting passengers and larger objects." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The trunk … is both deep and squared-out. A standard 40/20/40-split folding backseat enables a wide pass-through space free of any ledges or trailing seatbelts." -- Cars.com (2017)
