2018 Audi A4 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Audi A4 was new.

Interior: 9.0

First-class materials, a spacious cabin, and a user-friendly infotainment system help make the interior of the 2018 Audi A4 one of the best in the class. Its impressive technology options include handwriting and voice recognition, both of which work well, and a state-of-the-art digital driver's display that spans 12.3 inches.

  • "Audi keeps setting new quality benchmarks for cabin materials and construction. The Mercedes C-Class might appear more luxurious, but a closer look gives the A4's better-made cabin an advantage." -- Edmunds
  • "Unfortunately none of the test cars available to us came equipped with wood trim, so we'll have to wait and see how the A4 measures up against the C-Class and its gorgeous black burl walnut. Even so, it's safe to say that the A4 is comfortable and pleasant to spend time in and surely a notch above the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, and Lexus IS in design and refinement." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)
  • "Unlike the subtle exterior changes, the A4's interior makeover represents cutting-edge technology and modernism." -- New York Daily News (2017)

The 2018 A4 comes with leather upholstery, heated front seats with eight-way power adjustments, and seating for five people. Seating options include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Even though this is a small car, the A4 sedan's back seat feels roomy enough for two adults, and you get more legroom than you would in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class or BMW 3 Series. Visibility is good all-around, and most test drivers say the standard front seats are comfortable (and the upgraded sport seats are even better).

Caregivers will appreciate how easy it is to find and use LATCH hardware to clip in child safety seats. The outboard seats each come with a tether anchor and a set of lower anchors, and the middle seat has a tether anchor only. All anchors are clearly marked, and little effort is needed to attach car seats.

  • "The optional sport seats are our favorite for the adjustable thigh support, but the standard seats are praiseworthy in their own right. Both are firmly padded and well shaped for hours of comfortable touring." -- Edmunds
  • "The cabin also shows attention to practicality. Thin window pillars all around make for good visibility, and the front seats have lots of legroom and knee space thanks to a low center console that retains its convenient height-adjustable armrest. The backseat, meanwhile, is downright generous for this class. Headroom and legroom are good, and the seat sits high enough off the floor for good thigh support. It's a major improvement over the 2016 A4's backseat." -- Cars.com (2017)
  • "The front seats remain among the best in the industry. The rear seats can come with their own entertainment tablets; more importantly, they welcome six-foot-tall adults without the yoga poses required by some competitors." -- Yahoo Autos (2017)

Interior Features

Tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and a sunroof come standard in the 2018 A4, along with the MMI infotainment interface, a 7-inch display, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice command capability.

The A4's infotainment system is straightforward and responsive, and between the basic and upgraded system, the latter is the one that impresses test drivers the most. It comes with extras like handwriting recognition and navigation, as well as a driver's display called the virtual cockpit. You can customize this crisp 12.3-inch screen, and when used in tandem with the head-up display, the driver can spend more time with their eyes forward instead of turned toward a central screen.

Other available options include satellite radio, HD Radio, a proximity key, and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, rain-sensing headlights and wipers, Audi Pre Sense Basic (after detecting an impending forward collision, this prepares the car by rolling up windows and tightening seat belts), and Audi Pre Sense City (composed of forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection). Safety options include Audi Side Assist with Pre Sense Rear, which prepares the vehicle if it detects a collision from behind and comes with rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. Front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, active lane assist, high-beam assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology are also available.

  • "The 2017 Audi A4 also employs a new 12.3-inch video screen in the center stack as a display for the latest MMI infotainment software. The rotary command wheel on the center console remains useful and easy to control, but the updates to the Audi Connect system take things to new heights. …We never once reached for our iPhones, despite the fact that the A4 has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built-in." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)
  • "On the technology side, the A4 gets the company's new Virtual Cockpit with a 12.3-inch gauge screen, which uses Google Earth to provide the maps, terrain and upcoming traffic and navigation info. The A4 also comes with Audi connect, which packages together all the applications that connect the A4 to the Internet like weather info, Siri Eyes Free, and automatic crash notification, as well as Android Auto and Apple Car Play. We're not going to call it nerd heaven, but if intelligence is the new cool, the A4 is Steve McQueen." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "Directly in front of the shifter is the aforementioned MMI knob. That top surface of the shifter just happens to be perfectly positioned to act as a wrist rest to steady your hand while manipulating the controller. I've long preferred these rotary control schemes to touchscreens in the automotive environment and this setup may well be the best yet." -- Forbes (2017)

The trunk size of the A4 – at 13 cubic feet – is about average for this class, but its shape makes the space more convenient than some rivals. The wide opening and broad interior lets you bring along large items (like golf clubs). If you need even more room, the rear seats fold with a 40/20/40 split, so you can customize the space to carry both passengers and large items.

  • "In terms of size, the A4's cargo and storage is typical for the class, but the A4 gets additional consideration for the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats that allow for greater flexibility when transporting passengers and larger objects." -- Edmunds
  • "The trunk, though a modest 13 cubic feet by the numbers, is both deep and squared-out. A standard 40/20/40-split folding backseat enables a wide pass-through space free of any ledges or trailing seatbelts." -- Cars.com (2017)
