2010 Audi A4 Overview

When it was new, critics praised the 2010 Audi A4 for its agile handling and opulent interior, which many said is one of the best overall cabins available at this price point. Some wished for a stronger engine because the A4’s engine is short on cylinders and horsepower when compared with many of its key rivals, but most said the A4 is powerful enough for most. Those pining for more ponies can opt for the 2010 Audi S4, which is a performance variant of the A4. The A4 has an exceptional safety score and was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The A4 is powered by a 211-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Few critics called it fast, but many said it feels fairly peppy. A drivetrain adjustment control, called Drive Select, is available on upper trims, which allows drivers to adjust suspension, steering and throttle settings, which driving enthusiasts may appreciate. The A4 is available with front- and all-wheel drive, but only AWD variants are available with a manual transmission. Front-wheel drive models come standard with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), while a six-speed automatic is available on AWD models. A front-wheel drive A4 earns a fuel economy estimate of 23/30 mpg city/highway, which is fairly good for the class. Opting for AWD drops fuel economy slightly. Maximum trunk space in the A4 is 12 cubic feet, which is smaller than the trunks of many competitors. However, those who need more cargo space should check out the 2010 A4 Avant wagon, which is reviewed separately.

Inside, critics said that the A4 upholds Audi’s standards of high-quality, well-designed interiors. Most found the seats very comfortable, though a couple critics had minor gripes about not having enough legroom. The A4 comes standard with leather seats, a power sunroof, satellite radio and a 10-speaker stereo. Upper trim levels add features like Bluetooth, navigation, tri-zone climate control, a Bang & Olufsen stereo and Audi’s Multi Media Interface infotainment system.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is similar in size to the A4, and many critics found their handling to be similar, meaning that both are sporty, but not harsh. The base C-Class is rear-wheel drive, and you may find that it handles better than the base front-wheel drive A4. Both the C-Class and A4 earn good safety ratings.

Critics said the 2010 Infiniti G37 is one of the sportiest offerings among 2010 midsize cars, thanks to its athletic handling and strong V6 engine. Keep in mind that its fuel economy is slightly worse than that of the A4, but it does have more than 100 additional horsepower.
