2009 Audi A4 Review

Completely redesigned for 2009, the Audi A4 melds an upscale interior with refined, agile handling and impeccable safety scores, making it a good choice for anyone looking for a well-rounded 2009 midsize car.

Pros & Cons

  • High-quality interior
  • Agile, composed handling
  • Outstanding safety ratings
  • Limited trunk space

2009 Audi A4 Overview

When it was new, critics praised the 2009 Audi A4 for blending the good handling of a sport sedan with the high-quality, comfortable interior of a luxury car. The A4 is neither the fastest sport sedan nor the most opulent luxury cruiser, but its blend of both should appeal to many people. Driving enthusiasts should look for examples with Audi Drive Select, which allows the driver to adjust throttle and suspension settings for increased comfort or better performance. Those who need lots of cargo space will want to look at the 2009 A4 Avant (wagon), which is reviewed separately.

The 2009 A4 is available with two engines. The first is a 211-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and the second is a 3.2-liter V6 that makes 265 horsepower. Reviewers liked both engines, and although the V6 has more horsepower, the turbo-four has more torque, which makes it feel faster from a stop. Four-cylinder models come with either front- or all-wheel drive, while V6 models are AWD-only. An all-wheel drive A4 with the turbo-four and an automatic transmission gets 21/27 mpg city/highway, which is about average for the class. V6 models get slightly less, and manual transmission- or front-wheel drive-equipped variants get slightly better estimates.

Critics liked the A4’s interior, saying it employs high-quality materials and has a pleasing design. They said the front seats are comfortable and spacious, and that the back seats have more legroom than the outgoing 2008 model. Maximum trunk space is 12.4 cubic feet, which is a bit low for the class. The A4 comes standard with leather seats and a sunroof. Available equipment includes navigation, a Bang and Olufsen stereo, tri-zone climate control, Bluetooth and rear parking sensors.

Other Cars to Consider

If you like the A4, you may also like the highly-ranked 2009 Acura TL. Critics said that all-wheel drive TLs have excellent sport-sedan handling, and they generally liked its modern, high-tech interior.

Another 2009 midsize car you might like is the 2009 BMW 3-Series. The 3-Series was regarded as one of the benchmarks among sport sedans, thanks to its neutral, athletic handling and smooth engines. If you’re looking for a fun car, the 3-Series is certainly worth a look.
