2017 BMW X1

$33,750 | U.S. News Score: 8.5/10

The 2017 BMW X1 is a leader in this class for being fun to drive and luxurious – as well as spacious, which is a tough trifecta to meet for a subcompact SUV. Its 228-horsepower turbocharged engine is zippy enough for the highway, but its tight turning radius and excellent handling make the X1 a standout in town too.

The X1 has more cargo space than most rivals, and more than some larger SUVs. Leatherette upholstery is standard, and the rear seats have plenty of room for adults. All this space comes at a price point nearly identical to the Audi Q3’s price tag.

The one drawback of the X1 is that it has no standard active safety technology – not even a rearview camera. Things like parking sensors and adaptive cruise control are all optional. But it did receive top crash test scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
