First Look at the All-New 2017 BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series is a midsize luxury sedan that has been in production since 1972, and was the vehicle that started BMW’s 3 Series/5 Series/7 Series naming convention. It is BMW’s second best-selling model.

The 5 Series begins its seventh generation in 2017, and it does so as a lighter car that produces less drag and borrows some new autonomous driving features from the 7 Series, with which it shares a platform.

While it began its life in the 1970s as a four-door sedan with a manual transmission, the 5 Series is now manufactured as a sedan, wagon, and hatchback, with manual, automatic and dual-clutch transmissions, as well as a performance-oriented M5 edition (though not all those options are available in North America).

The outgoing sixth-generation 5 Series was launched in 2010, featuring a total redesign of the suspension and an interior design change that returned the 5 Series to a more classical BMW design: The center console was once again angled toward the driver.
