2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Performance

2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Performance Review

Performance: 8.3

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio combines energetic engines, athletic handling, and a comfortable ride into a winning package. The one weakness in its otherwise stellar performance is its just-average fuel economy rating.

  • "The Stelvio is an SUV for people who love driving with a strong and responsive engine, sporty transmission, and engaging handling." -- Edmunds
  • "The Alfa Romeo Stelvio feels very much like a bigger, taller Giulia. While this does mean that it feels a bit less nimble and frisky, it also means that it's one of the best drivers in its class." -- Autoblog (2018)
  • "… Alfa has equipped the Stelvio with a 280 horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, a ZF 8-speed gearbox and a sophisticated suspension setup. In addition the all-wheel-drive system will, in most cases, send all of the power to the rear wheels. The end result is a car that has enough power to feel sporty, if only just, and a transmission that gives you sharp ratio changes." -- CNET (2018)

Acceleration and Power

There are two engine options for the Stelvio. All but the top trim get a 280-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The Quadrifoglio gets a 505-horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6. Regardless of which engine you choose, you’ll get an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base engine produces more horsepower than the turbo-fours of most competitors. Both engine options feel hearty and help this vehicle accelerate quickly. The transmission typically shifts smoothly, although it can be quick to upshift.

With 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, the base Stelvio gets typical fuel economy estimates for the luxury compact SUV class. Unsurprisingly, the V6-powered Quadrifoglio fares worse. It gets just 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

  • "The Stelvio comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, as virtually all of its competitors do. However, it produces 280 hp and 306 pound-feet of torque, which basically crushes them all, and consequently results in a 0-to-60-mph sprint of 5.4 seconds – ditto." -- Autoblog
  • "While this powertrain was effortlessly quick in our testing and sounded great, the Stelvio's sole setup—aside from the high-performance Quadrifoglio—eliminates choices for the buyer and limits towing to a maximum of 3000 pounds. During daily driving, we were particularly fond of its responsive throttle and smooth power delivery." -- Car and Driver
  • "Power delivery from the four-cylinder engine is urgent, and you'll be hard-pressed to feel the difference between the Stelvio and some vehicles with bigger engines. Our as-tested 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds puts the Stelvio within half a second of some heavy hitters." -- Edmunds

Handling and Braking

The Alfa Romeo rides smoothly on most roads, and it’s one of the more comfortable crossovers in the luxury compact SUV class. It exhibits agile handling, thanks in part to its responsive steering. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "Ride quality is impressive for a sporty crossover. The Stelvio absorbs sharper bumps and road imperfections yet still feels connected to the road. It can get bouncy, especially on uneven concrete-slab freeways. Around town, it's one of the more comfortable sport-oriented crossovers." -- Edmunds
  • "This Italian thoroughbred is one of the sharpest driving of its ilk and it borrows heavily from the also-entertaining Giulia sports sedan." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Stelvio will immediately feel a little different behind the wheel than its competitors due to steering that is shockingly quick, yet precise and easily operated at low parking-lot speeds. … However, it's not quite as zesty or characterful as you might expect." -- Autoblog
