2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Performance Review

Performance: 8.7

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of the most athletic vehicles in the luxury small car class. This sharp-handling Italian sports sedan tackles corners with enthusiasm and comes with one of two powerful turbocharged engines. Its ride may be too firm for some, however.

  • "The Giulia's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 280 horsepower, sounds intoxicating, and feels gutsy when driven hard. The Giulia pulls away from stoplights with zeal while singing soaring Italian arias." -- Car and Driver
  • "The smooth 8-speed automatic transmission shifts eagerly whether left to its own devices or controlled via the large -- perhaps too large -- steering-column-mounted paddles." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Alfa Romeo makes some bold performance statements about the Giulia. And from what we've experienced so far, the statements are accurate. All high-performance Quadrifoglio models boast strong engines for their respective segments and deliver a driving experience to be relished." -- Edmunds (2018)

Acceleration and Power

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 280 horsepower is standard in this Alfa. It hustles the Giulia up to speed quickly while delivering fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Those EPA estimates are in line with those of class rivals.

You'll get brute power from the performance-enhanced Quadrifoglio model and its 505-horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It will launch the car from zero to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. As you might suspect, fuel economy takes a hit in the Quadrifoglio. It gets just 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Both engines are paired with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

  • "A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 280 horsepower provides snappy acceleration and sounds great doing it." -- Car and Driver
  • "Like other entry-level luxury-sports sedans, the Alfa Romeo uses a turbocharged 4-cylinder, but the Alfa’s engine punches above its weight, making 280 horsepower and a stouter 306 lb-ft of torque. That oomph is sent to the rear wheels or, in Q4 models, all four. In standard form, the Giulia is one quick and satisfying machine to drive." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "This [2.0-liter] motor offers way more excitement than the on-paper specifications would lead you to believe. It's snarly, torquey, low-revving and full of character. It's a good match for the quirky Alfa. In testing, 0-60 mph came in 5.3 seconds with quick shifts and no wheelspin from the all-wheel drive." -- Edmunds (2019)

Handling and Braking

The Giulia drives like a sports sedan should. Agile handling and excellent steering feedback allow the driver to throw this car into mountain curves or whisk along city streets. Body roll is well mitigated. The suspension, however, may prove too harsh for some folks. The Alfa Drive Mode Selector lets you choose from Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced Efficiency modes to tailor the ride to your tastes. The Quadrifoglio model adds a Race mode.

Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "Agile and lively at all times, the Giulia is a driving enthusiast's sports sedan. The front tires are very responsive to driver inputs and speak clearly to the driver through the leather-wrapped steering wheel. Body roll is well controlled, and in hard corners the Giulia remains flat and predictable. It's easy to drive quickly and aggressively, but it's equally comfortable when driven sedately." -- Car and Driver
  • A standard sport suspension and balanced chassis lend well to tearing around corners, but the trade-off is a stiffer ride quality." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "When driven in Dynamic mode, the way a sporting Alfa should be driven, the weighting is spot-on. And when you combine that just-right amount of effort with the accuracy, steering quickness and the near-perfect steering wheel, you can't help but go hunting for the perfect line through every corner." -- Edmunds (2019)
