2014 Acura TL Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Acura TL was new.

Interior: 8.2

Automotive critics agree that the 2014 Acura TL has an attractive, well-made interior that features beautiful leather upholstery and high-quality interior trim. They say the front seats are quite spacious, comfortable and supportive, and most agree that the rear seats are as well. Some reviewers are disappointed with the amount of trunk space, but the TL does offer a decent amount of cargo space for the class. While some reviewers say that the TL’s controls could be easier to use, others write that the TL has a user-friendly navigation system and an optional stereo with exceptional sound quality.

  • "In the TL, you'll find supple leather upholstery, solid construction and plenty of technology-based features." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2014 Acura TL's 5-passenger cabin is luxuriously sporty." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "TL's cabin generally presents well, with rich-feeling leather and soft dash and door surfaces. Some hard plastics are disappointing, but most are kept out of direct sight." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The interior is top-shelf and handsome in nearly every way, which struck me the most after a commuting lap." -- AutoWeek (2012)

The 2014 Acura TL seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver seat and an eight-way power passenger seat. Upgraded leather and heated and ventilated front seats are available in option packages. Reviewers agree that the TL’s front seats are roomy, comfortable and supportive. Most reviewers say that the back seats are spacious and comfortable as well. One auto writer says forward visibility is good in the TL, but rearward visibility is compromised slightly by the TL’s high trunk lid.

  • "Up front, the nicely bolstered seats are as comfortable and supportive as they are good looking. The rear seats are also generously sized, offering accommodations that are much kinder to adult passengers than those in many comparable models." -- Edmunds
  • "The heated front seats are comfortable and well-padded, and SH-AWD models feature more aggressive side bolsters to keep you in place." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Slim front roof pillars provide good forward visibility. Rear visibility is hampered a bit by a tall decklid; models with the Technology or Advance Packages include a helpful rearview camera." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The TL is the largest and roomiest sedan in its class and one of the few whose back seat can graciously handle long hauls with long adults." -- The New York Times (2012)

Interior Features

The 2014 Acura TL comes standard with a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, an eight-speaker stereo system, satellite radio, a USB port and an auxiliary jack. The Special Edition package adds keyless access with push-button start, while the Technology package includes voice-controlled navigation, a rearview camera and an ELS surround-sound audio system. The Advance package adds blind spot monitoring.

Some reviewers think the TL’s dashboard and center-stack controls are cluttered and overwhelming, while others say they are surprisingly intuitive. One critic wishes the navigation system had a touch screen rather than an interface that relies on a dial and buttons. However, another reviewer says the TL’s navigation system is one of the most intuitive on the market, and a third says the voice command feature works well. The TL’s optional ELS surround-sound audio system earns praise for its excellent sound quality.

  • "Despite the amount of technology on offer here, the design and layout of gauges, displays and controls makes accessing all these features a lot easier than you might expect at first glance. Voice commands that come as part of the Technology option package also work well, allowing the driver to keep both eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel." -- Edmunds
  • "Less appealing is the TL's center stack, crowded with buttons for climate control, audio, and navigation functions." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "TLs so equipped [with navigation] use an ‘interface dial’ to access these systems. It's not as complicated as some European premium cars, but a touchscreen would probably make things simpler." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The navigation system remains one of the best, most intuitive units from any OEM." -- AutoWeek (2012)
  • "A particular high point of the TL SH-AWD is the stereo, with its wide range of audio sources and exceptional sound quality." -- CNET (2012 ELS surround-sound system)

The 2014 Acura TL has a 13.1 cubic-foot trunk, which is good for the class. The SH-AWD model has a slightly smaller 12.5 cubic-foot trunk. The TL’s rear seats cannot fold down to expand cargo space, as they can in several competitors. Though the 2014 TL’s trunk space is above average for the class, some reviewers think that the trunk seems small. One auto writer says that small-item storage in the TL’s cabin falls short of some rivals’ in the class.

  • "Out back, you'll find the TL's trunk a bit on the small side. Base models offer a mere 13.1 cubic feet of space, while the TL SH-AWD's trunk shrinks to just 12.5 cubic feet." -- Edmunds
  • "… cargo space is on the small side at just over 13 cubic feet in front-wheel-drive (FWD) models and 12.5 for SH-AWD versions." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Interior storage space is not great for the class. The door map pockets aren't especially large, and the center console box is set too far aft for convenient access." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "Trunk space is adequate with 13.1 cubic feet of space (12.5 with AWD), though the rear seatbacks do not fold flat to expand its cargo-carrying abilities." -- Forbes (2012)
