2007 Acura TL Overview

Introduced in 1996, the Acura TL underwent a comprehensive redesign in 2004. For 2007, it gets a mid-cycle makeover that includes interior and exterior restyling, as well as performance improvements. Consumer Guide calls the new TL "an impressive blend of sport and luxury." Automobile.com continues the praise, commenting that the "Acura TL is a great sedan that deftly combines modern styling, advanced engineering, cutting edge technology and an athletic grace, both in its driving demeanor and appearance."

For this year, Acura brings back the high-performance "Type-S" model after a three-year hiatus - a move that delights critics. "There is no question that the TL Type-S is the best TL ever, and it's more car than most entry-lux buyers would ever need or expect," Edmunds raves. "It delivers an astonishing amount of performance and equipment, some of which is unavailable in the competitors, for a price that'll at least rattle the cages of the rear-drive faithful."

While almost all reviewers are extremely pleased with the new TL and Type-S, several of them point out a shortcoming - the TL is front-wheel drive, and no all- or rear-wheel drive version is offered. Kelley Blue Book says, "While the TL's front-wheel-drive architecture is an advantage for some - especially those in wetter climates - other enthusiast buyers might prefer the driving dynamics associated with rear-wheel drive." Road and Track notes "The TL is a roomy, comfortable, good-looking, sporty and practical car, but it's not as pure as a rear-wheel driver." Forbes advises buyers to look elsewhere if they prefer "a luxury sedan that's larger, rear-drive and/or with a V8 engine." A redesigned TL, which may feature standard all-wheel drive, is expected for 2009.

But for those that can live with front-wheel drive, the TL is a steal. The 2007 model is a Consumer Guide "Best Buy," and delivers "high refinement, solid workmanship, and lots of features at hard-to-beat prices," they say. Kelley Blue Book comments, "Fast, fun, comfortable and convenient, the TL is arguably the category's most well-rounded entry and almost certainly its best value." Of even the higher-priced Type-S, Road and Track concludes, "t $38,795 for a fully-loaded version, the Type-S is an attractive choice no matter what the venue." Wrapping up the praise is the Sacramento Bee, which comments, "for those paying nearly $50,000 for midsize luxury cars with scoot, the Type-S shapes up as a genuine bargain."

As for resale value, Kelley Blue Book calls the TL "one of the best values on the road. We expect the TL's resale values to perform comparably to the 3-Series, G35 and IS and better than the A4." IntelliChoice gives the base model a "excellent" value rating for its predicted five-year total cost of ownership, compared to vehicles in its class. Cars.com also comments on cost of ownership, noting, "Priced as it is at the low end of the premium/luxury segment, the TL's expected low cost of ownership is alluring to people who are hesitant to jump from a more modest car class."

The Acura TL is available in two trims: the base TL model and the Type-S. The base model is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, while the Type-S is paired either with the five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual.
