2017 Acura RLX Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Acura RLX was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.7

While the interior of the 2017 Acura RLX features quality materials, the design is bland and unimpressive. There is ample rear-seat passenger room, and the front seats are comfortable but lack support. Cargo room is small for the class. Infotainment features function well, but the system is visually disappointing.

  • "The RLX interior is best described as functionally pleasant; there isn't much of a wow factor. The top infotainment display has a lower resolution than the bottom touchscreen, and the controls look dated and lack an intuitive flow. You'll find better interiors at this price." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2017 Acura RLX sedan's 5-passenger cabin lives up to luxury-car standards thanks to quality materials, a slick dual-screen information system and thoughtful touches such as power-operated steering-wheel adjustment." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Unfortunately, the RLX's styling is a bit generic, lacking the visual punch of cars like the Audi A7, Infiniti Q70 or Cadillac CTS." -- Autotrader (2016)

Seating

The 2017 RLX seats five on standard leather seats, along with 12-way power-adjustable front seats and heated front seats. Available upgrades include heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a woodgrain shift knob, and a woodgrain steering wheel.

Rear-seat passenger room is excellent, with ample legroom. Headroom is adequate for most people, but taller passengers may be best-served riding up front. The front seats are comfortable for long trips, but they lack support because of how wide and flat they are.

The RLX’s LATCH car-seat system features two complete sets of attachment points. The top tethers are easy to find and connect to, and the lower anchors are accessed easily via a seam in the seat cushion.

  • "Rear-seat passengers are treated to a generous 38.8 inches of legroom." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The RLX's roomy cabin and wide seats are also a welcome respite from other sedans that are seemingly built to accommodate only the svelte." -- Autotrader (2016)
  • "From the moment you step inside the cabin of the … Acura RLX, you can't help but notice the spacious feel of the interior. But it's the rear passengers who will be most surprised by the accommodations, as the RLX offers nearly 3 inches more legroom than most other sedans in this class. Though it is perhaps the most adult-friendly rear seat in the category, taller passengers may want a little extra headroom and more toe room under the front seats. And those front seats, while perfectly comfortable for most trips, left us wishing for more support on longer journeys." -- Edmunds (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, a 14-speaker audio system, a USB port, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, satellite radio, HD Radio, a touch-screen infotainment system, navigation, voice-command recognition, a moonroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, proximity key entry, push-button start, a multiview camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include a power rear sunshade, a 14-speaker Krell premium sound system, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera.

The RLX's infotainment system is divided between two screens, with an 8-inch screen dedicated to navigation and a 7-inch touch-screen display below. The touch screen quickly processes commands, but its graphics are uninspiring. Some climate controls are time consuming to adjust through the touch screen with no physical controls.

  • "Detractors include touch-based controls of functions such as fan speed and airflow, which would be easier to use with traditional buttons or switches." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The interior does get points for both its array of the latest technology and its ease of use. The … navigation system is a good example of this intuitive operation, allowing you to enter destinations using the large control knob, the 7-inch touchscreen below the 8-inch map display or by voice commands. But there are a couple of negatives here, including graphics that aren't as crisp as those in other luxury models and several basic functions that aren't as instinctive as we'd like." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "The multi-touch screen has haptic feedback, which means it buzzes slightly when touched to mimic the feel of a real button. Best of all, this touchscreen responds quickly, so when it switches to a keyboard for navigation inputs, the experience is one of convenience instead of frustration." -- Popular Mechanics (2014)

Cargo

The RLX has 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is among the lowest in the entire class. However, it's capable enough for many daily applications.

  • "The RLX … fails to impress with its trunk accommodations and in-cabin storage for personal effects." -- Edmunds
  • "Even with that stretch-out room, trunk capacity is still roughly 15 cubic feet, ample for most duties." -- Kelley Blue Book
