2008 Acura RL Review

Note: This review was created when the 2008 Acura RL was new.

The RL delivers one of the best combinations of technology, all-wheel drive and luxury in its class.  If you're in the market for a luxury large car, you should also consider the Infiniti M or Mercedes Benz E Class.

2008 Acura RL Overview

Reviewers see the 2008 Acura RL as a solid pick for technology junkies who want a smooth-riding, luxury sedan that packs a lot of punch in the sticker price. CNET notes, "People who prefer a high-tech premium coupe but need a sedan would find that the RL makes a good compromise." According to Newsday, "The RL is a big step up from its predecessor and quite a value considering its standard equipment and its excellent ride and handling."

IntelliChoice gives the 2007 Acura RL an "Above Average" rating for its predicted five-year total cost of ownership, compared to other vehicles in its class.

The RL offers only a V6 engine, in a class where many buyers have come to take V8 power for granted.  One might expect the RL, then, to at least offer good fuel economy.  Surprisingly, it finishes in the bottom half of its class for that measure -- something Acura may need to look at more closely, since gas prices have been setting records throughout 2008.

The 2008 Acura RL comes in only one trim, but there are two packages available - the Technology Package and the CMBS/PAX Package (which requires that you purchase the Technology Package). The RL carries over into the 2008 model with few changes, and a redesigned RL is rumored for the 2010 or 2011 model-year, says Consumer Guide.
