2014 Acura RDX Overview

Is the 2014 Acura RDX a Good Used SUV?

The 2014 Acura RDX is a great used luxury compact SUV. It mixes the fun driving dynamics and comfy interior you expect from a luxury vehicle with the solid reliability and low price you might not. We named the RDX the 2014 Best Luxury Compact SUV for the Money.

The RDX has a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 273 horsepower. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. The smooth V6 provides zippy acceleration and returns good fuel economy (up to 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway). The RDX’s precise steering gives it a sporty feel, but the ride is comfortable. The RDX can tow 1,500 pounds when properly equipped.

The RDX seats five and has ample interior space, high-quality materials, and a hushed cabin. All models are equipped with leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and a moonroof. The RDX’s front seats offer fine support for long drives, and the comfy rear seats have lots of legroom. There are two full LATCH connectors in the second row for securing child safety seats. The 60/40 split rear seats can fold to increase cargo space from 26.1 to 61.3 cubic feet. Two levers located in the cargo area make folding these seats simple.

The RDX features a straightforward infotainment system with large buttons on the dashboard, which make it easy to use on the road. Standard tech includes a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a CD player, and a 5-inch display screen. The available Technology package adds navigation, a larger 8-inch screen, 15 gigabytes of audio storage space, and a rich 10-speaker sound system. Not all of the RDX’s features work perfectly, though. The voice-recognition system can require multiple attempts before a command is understood. Rivals like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 provide more robust infotainment systems.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Acura RDX?

The 2014 Acura RDX is one of the more reliable vehicles in the luxury compact SUV class. It has an above-average reliability score of 3.5 out of five points from J.D. Power and Associates.

How Safe Is the RDX?

The 2014 Acura RDX performs well in crash testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the RDX a score of Good, the highest possible, in all four test areas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the RDX a perfect five-star overall rating, as well as five stars for frontal and side impacts and four stars in rollover crash testing.

A rearview camera is standard, but you won’t find any other advanced driver assistance features. Many competitors in this class, including the BMW X3, offer parking sensors, lane departure warning, and adaptive headlights. Some even offer adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning with brake assist, such as the Volvo XC60.

Should I Consider Another Used RDX?

The 2014 Acura RDX is part of the second generation, which launched in 2013 and includes the 2017 model year. If you’re shopping for a used 2014 Acura RDX, you’ll want to give the 2013 model a look. You’ll get the same basic features for less money. The 2015 model saw no major changes.

Which Used RDX Model Is Right for Me?

The 2014 RDX has one trim level. Standard features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 5-inch infotainment screen, rearview camera, seven speakers, Bluetooth, and a moonroof. The only optional equipment when the RDX was new came as part of a Technology package. The Technology package includes a larger 8-inch screen, satellite navigation, voice recognition, 10 speakers, and a power tailgate. Unless those features are important to you, go with the base model to save money.

A certified pre-owned RDX may suit you best. With Acura's CPO program, there is a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty, and the original new-car powertrain warranty is extended to seven years or 100,000 miles. Acura CPO models must pass a 182-point inspection. Additional benefits may be available, so read Acura’s warranty page carefully.

2014 Acura RDX and Other SUVS to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Acura RDX or 2014 Honda CR-V?

The 2014 Acura RDX and Honda CR-V have a lot more in common than meets the eye. Both of these five-seaters were assembled at the same Ohio factory and share the same vehicle platform. The RDX is the sportier of the two, courtesy of its zippy V6 engine. However, the CR-V is the smarter buy. Not only are used CR-Vs less expensive, but they offer better fuel economy, superior reliability, comparable interior refinement, and many of the same features. In fact, some CR-Vs have a rear-seat DVD screen; the RDX does not. At the end of the day, both are good SUVs. If you can live without V6 power, go for the CR-V – it’s the better buy.

Which Is Better: 2014 Acura RDX or 2014 Acura MDX?

There are several reasons to pick the 2014 Acura MDX over its RDX sibling. The MDX seats seven versus five, offers more cargo space, and has a long list of convenience and active safety features that the RDX doesn’t have, including forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a rear-seat DVD screen. The tech-heavy MDX is the family favorite. That said, the RDX is the sweeter deal. It scores much higher for reliability and has lower used car prices while matching the MDX with its good fuel economy, premium interior, and solid safety scores.

Which Is Better: 2014 Acura RDX or 2014 Lexus RX 350?

The five-seat luxury midsize 2014 Lexus RX 350 and Acura RDX both deliver good fuel economy, offer well-built and cozy interiors, and rate highly for crash test safety. The Lexus takes the edge thanks to its perfect reliability rating, extra 19 cubic feet of cargo space, and much larger 3,500-pound towing capacity. The RDX, however, benefits from lower used car prices and a simpler infotainment system. Both SUVs rank at the top of their respective classes and are great options if you’re shopping for a used luxury vehicle.
