2020 Acura MDX Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.3

The 2020 Acura MDX has some premium cabin materials, but many of its rivals are more opulent. There are plenty of high-tech features, but the infotainment system takes time to master. Cargo space is typical, and the seats are comfortable, though the back row is tight, which is a common complaint for three-row vehicles.

  • Everything seems meticulously put together, and the Advance's wood trim adds an air of luxury. However, European competitors still manage to feel more substantial than the MDX, and their cabin designs are more elegant." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • Fit/finish is excellent, as is front-seat comfort, but the third row is best used for kids. … Ergonomically the MDX takes a little getting used too, especially its dual-infotainment screens and its push-button shifter." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "… Acura put a great deal of effort into making the cabin a comfortable and user-friendly space." -- Left Lane News (2016)

Seating

Up to seven people can sit in this SUV (six if you opt for the second-row captain's chairs). Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and 12-way power-adjustable front seats are standard. You also get easy access to the third row with standard One-Touch Smart Slide Walk-in, which lets you fold and slide the second-row by pushing a button. Upgraded leather upholstery is available, as are a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and rear outboard heated seats.

The first two rows are comfortable and spacious, though headroom gets a little tight in the second row. Like many three-row vehicles though, space in the very back is better left for kids. For securing child safety seats, there are complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second row, and every third-row seat has a tether anchor.

  • The third row will suit only kids and perhaps adults of short stature. Still, it's better than the third rows of some other luxury SUVs. The front seats feel spacious in every dimension, but headroom in the second row is surprisingly tight." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Both driver and passenger accommodations are comfortable, well-padded and roomy." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "All 3rd-row access should be this easy. Just push a button on the 2nd-row seat in a new MDX, and it flips and folds quickly to provide access to the pair of seats in the rear without having to strain, lug or tug. Other SUV manufacturers should take notes." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Interior Features

You'll find a good number of standard features in this luxury SUV. It comes with a dual-screen infotainment system, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six USB ports, Bluetooth, an eight-speaker stereo, a moonroof, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and tri-zone automatic climate control. The stereo can be upgraded to one with 10, 11, or 12 speakers. You could also get options like a navigation system, HD Radio, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9 or 16.2-inch screen.

Some active safety features are also standard. These include a rearview camera, a road departure mitigation system, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, a pre-collision warning and braking system, and adaptive cruise control. More safety features are available too, such as a surround-view parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and a head-up display.

The MDX's dual-screen setup has quick response times and an intuitive menu layout, but only the lower screen has touch capability.

  • "For 2018, the Acura MDX gets a revised dual-screen infotainment setup with a better user interface and faster response times." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "After a refresh last year, the 2018 MDX is improved further by a faster and more powerful entertainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, addressing the biggest complaints we've had with prior years of the MDX." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "This year the 2018 MDX gets an improved infotainment system with more intuitive menus and a redesigned dual-screen interface with faster response." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Cargo

With 15 cubic feet of space behind the third row, the MDX doesn’t have much cargo room when all the seats are upright. Folding down the second row reveals 38.4 cubic feet, and there’s a total of 68.4 cubic feet of space behind the front seats. Those figures are more in line with the average luxury midsize SUV class, though they’re nothing to write home about.

A power liftgate is standard, and there’s a storage bin beneath the cargo floor for added space.

  • "Total cargo capacity is slightly larger than space in other three-row midsize luxury crossovers, and more sizable than in two-row rivals. The ease with which the third and second row seats fold flat, providing a level load floor, is impressive. A storage bin beneath the cargo area is a nice touch." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Cargo space behind the third row isn't impressive, though you could argue that there are bigger SUVs available for those who value that attribute more." -- USA Today (2016)
  • "Acura uses every centimeter from the MDX's interior design, creating more usable space behind the third-row seat, as well as creating a level loading floor when the rear seats are folded flat." -- Autotrader (2016)
