2015 Acura MDX Overview

Is the 2015 Acura MDX a Good Used SUV?

The 2015 Acura MDX is a great luxury midsize SUV. In addition to its large cargo hold, it has an attractive cabin that features some top-notch materials. Its capable V6 engine feels energetic, and as an added bonus, fuel economy is good too. The ride is both spirited and comfortable. This vehicle also has high safety scores. However, some critics think its infotainment system’s controls can be burdensome.

Why You Can Trust Us

Our Acura MDX review includes far more than just one person's opinion. We collected professional evaluations from more than 31 sources and combined them with concrete data like fuel economy estimates, safety features, and performance specs to help you make an informed buying decision.

The U.S. News Best Cars team has been ranking cars, trucks, and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has a combined 75 years of automotive industry experience. To ensure our impartiality, we never accept expensive gifts or trips from car companies, and an outside team handles the advertising on our site.

How Much Does the 2015 Acura MDX Cost to Own?

Expenses for fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repairs for the 2015 MDX are projected to be around $30,400 over five years. That’s below average for the class. Those same costs for the 2015 BMW X5 are estimated to cost around $3,400 more than the MDX over five years.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New MDX?

Newer MDX models received a few major changes that are appealing to many shoppers, but it’s up to you to decide if they’re worth the extra money. A 2019 MDX retails for $44,300, which is significantly higher than the price of a used 2015 MDX. You may save a lot of money with the 2015 model, but you’ll miss out on the 2019 MDX’s refreshed exterior styling, nine-speed automatic transmission, revamped infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The 2019 also has more standard and available safety features with AcuraWatch, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and a surround-view parking camera.

There are no new luxury midsize SUVs that are comparable in price to a 2015 MDX. However, there are lots of new midsize SUVs you could consider. Both the three-row 2019 Honda Pilot and 2019 Mazda CX-9 retail for less than the high-end price of a 2015 MDX. Both have upscale cabins, as well as a higher maximum cargo capacity and more standard driver assistance features than the Acura. The Honda and Mazda also feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which aren’t available in the 2015 MDX.

Which Model Year of the Acura MDX Is Best?

The 2015 MDX belongs to a generation that launched with the 2014 model year. Acura made no major changes to the 2015 model, but the 2016 MDX gained a nine-speed automatic transmission, an all-wheel-drive system, and more safety features than prior models. Many of those became standard in the 2017 MDX, and a hybrid model debuted for that model year as well. Updates since then have been minor. We recommend the 2016 MDX because it’s similar to newer models but will save you a lot of money.

Certified Pre-Owned Acura MDX Warranty

Acura offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less, and with fewer than 80,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale’s date. Qualifying vehicles get a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty beyond the expiration of the standard 4- year/50,000-mile warranty, and the original new-car powertrain warranty is extended to seven years or 100,000 miles. Acura CPO models must pass a 182-point inspection. Additional benefits may be available, so read Acura’s warranty page carefully.

Acura’s CPO program doesn’t offer as many benefits as programs from other luxury automakers like Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Infiniti.

2015 Acura MDX Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 Acura MDX or 2015 Lexus RX 350?

The 2015 Lexus RX 350 is one of the best luxury midsize SUVs you can buy. It handles confidently and comfortably, delivering a cushioned ride. Brisk acceleration further boosts the driving appeal of this Lexus. The RX 350 has more cargo room and a better reliability rating than the MDX as well. When it was new, we named the Lexus RX 350 our 2015 Best Luxury 2-Row SUV for the Money and the 2015 Best Luxury 2-Row SUV for Families. The Acura is a good vehicle, but the Lexus is a better one.

Which Is Better: 2015 Acura MDX or 2015 Acura RDX?

The 2015 Acura RDX is a luxury compact SUV. While it lacks the third-row seating and cargo room of its larger sibling, the RDX actually has more legroom in the first two rows. Both vehicles have gentle rides, capable engines, and premium interiors. The RDX will save you around $5,100 on average compared to the MDX. However, aside from a rearview camera, there are no available driver assistance features in the RDX. In other respects, these two SUVs are similar, and choosing between them is a matter of personal preference.

Which Is Better: 2015 Acura MDX or 2015 Honda Pilot?

The 2015 Honda Pilot is a midsize SUV. While the MDX is a seven-passenger SUV, the Pilot seats eight and has more legroom in the second and third rows, plus a lot more cargo space than the Acura. The Pilot has a gentle ride and a lower price than the MDX as well. On average, buying the Honda will save you around $4,600 compared to the Acura. On the other hand, the MDX has a more capable V6 engine and nicer cabin materials than the Pilot. It also has higher safety scores, partially because of its longer list of driver aids. Unless you need the Honda’s extra space, or you’re shopping on a tight budget, pick the Acura.

How Does the 2015 Acura MDX Drive?

Powering every 2015 Acura MDX is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. It is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

The V6 engine is strong, and it holds its own in most driving situations. This luxury crossover will have little trouble getting up to speed. It also strikes a good balance between agility and comfort. Three drive modes – Comfort, Normal, and Sport – are available to modulate steering and throttle response, and they all help this Acura feel sporty around turns while retaining the pillowy ride often associated with luxury cars.

Does the 2015 Acura MDX Get Good Gas Mileage?

This Acura gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway (18/27 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive). Those are excellent fuel economy estimates among luxury midsize SUVs, slightly surpassing the ratings of the base 2015 BMW X5.

The 2015 Acura MDX seats seven people on standard leather upholstery. Power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and sliding second-row seats are standard too. Ventilated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, and second-row sunshades are available.

The first two rows have comfortable, roomy seats. The second row slides forward to allow easy access to the rear seats. Like most three-row SUVs, the third row is friendlier to kids, though adults can sit there for short trips. The cabin is full of luxury materials.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2015 Acura MDX?

This Acura has three complete sets of LATCH connectors in the second row and two additional tether anchors in the third row. Some of the lower anchors are set deeply in the seats, and some of the second-row tether anchors can be hard to find, while the third-row tethers can be confused with other hardware.

2015 Acura MDX Features

The MDX comes standard with an 8-inch touch screen, app connectivity through Pandora and Aha, an eight-speaker sound system, satellite radio, a USB port, and Bluetooth. Push-button start, proximity keyless entry, a rearview camera, tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a moonroof are also standard.

Available features include navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, HD Radio, a 10- or 12-speaker stereo, and remote start. Several safety features are available, including lane departure warning, lane keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic braking, blind spot monitoring, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a head-up display.
