2014 Acura MDX Overview

Is the 2014 Acura MDX a Good Used SUV?

The 2014 Acura MDX is a good all-around vehicle and a good car for families. It has ample power, a quality interior, and excellent safety ratings. It also won our 2014 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money and 2014 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for Families awards. Its one major blemish is that as it has aged, it has garnered one of the lowest reliability ratings in the class.

The MDX features a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine has ample power, and the MDX feels fairly quick driving around town. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. Both models get great gas mileage compared to other cars in the class; FWD models earn 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway and AWD models get 18 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. The MDX delivers a nice blend of ride comfort and cornering ability, but the brake pedal feels a little spongy.

The MDX seats seven and comes standard with leather upholstery. The front seats are heated and power-adjustable. While the front seats are pretty comfortable, both rear rows may be too low for some passengers' liking. And as with many 3-row SUVs, the third row is too small for most adults to get comfortable. The MDX has three full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats. All are in the second row, and the system is fairly easy to use overall.

The MDX's cabin is quiet. The design is simple and the materials are generally high-quality. All MDX models come with tri-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port, an eight-speaker audio system, a touch screen, and a rearview camera. Top-tier models feature adaptive cruise control, navigation, and a 10-speaker audio system. The touch-screen system controls most features, and it’s intuitive and simple. There are few physical buttons.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Acura MDX?

The 2014 Acura MDX has a reliability rating of two out of five, according to J.D. Power and Associates. That's a poor rating for a car overall, and it's one of the worst ratings in the luxurry miidsize SUV class.

How Safe Is the MDX?

The 2014 MDX has very high safety ratings, though many cars in this class do. It performed very well in crash tests, earning a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Should I Consider Another Used MDX?

The 2014 Acura MDX is part of a generation that debuted for 2014 and includes the 2017 model. The redesign gave the 2014 MDX improved fuel economy, a nicer interior, and new tech controls. In other words, it's a very different vehicle from pre-2014 models. If you're looking to compare the 2014 MDX, you'd do well to compare it to 2015 and 2016 models. They're part of the same generation and are largely the same in terms of size, performance, and interior quality, but 2015 and 2016 models have a more robust features list that includes additional infotainment and driver assistance technology. However, these models are likely to cost several thousand dollars more than a 2014 MDX, so you’ll have to evaluate the price/features trade-off for yourself.

Which Used MDX Model Is Right for Me?

The 2014 MDX only has one trim level, and feature availability depends on which of the three packages (Tech, Entertainment, and Advance) a model includes. The Acura MDX is offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. Considering that the packages add useful features like navigation and adaptive cruise control, it's probably worth the money to spring for an MDX equipped with at least the Tech package, if not one of the other packages as well.

A certified pre-owned MDX may suit you best. With Acura's CPO program, there is a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty, and the original new-car powertrain warranty is extended to seven years or 100,000 miles. Acura CPO models must pass a 182-point inspection. Additional benefits may be available, so read Acura’s warranty page carefully.

2014 Acura MDX and Other SUVS to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Acura MDX or 2014 Infiniti QX60?

The Infiniti QX60 is a luxury midsize sport utility vehicle that seats up to seven. Its well-built cabin features premium materials, and unlike its Acura rival, the QX60 has a third row that can comfortably fit adults. The QX60 doesn't have as much cargo space as the MDX, but it does offer more driver assistance features. The QX60 doesn't match the MDX for performance; the MDX has a more powerful engine, has better handling, and gets slightly better fuel economy. The QX60's safety rating is also lower than the MDX's, though the two have the same reliability rating. Finally, the QX60 costs about $1,000 to $2,000 more than the MDX. Add it all up, and it's pretty clear that most buyers will be happier buying an MDX.

Which Is Better: 2014 Acura MDX or 2014 Acura RDX?

The Acura RDX is a luxury compact SUV. It’s basically a smaller version of the MDX, with a V6 engine that provides nearly the same power output (17 horsepower less in the RDX). It’s available with front- or all-wheel drive, gets good fuel economy, and delivers a smooth ride and composed handling. Inside, the RDX has an attractive, upscale cabin and comfortable seats. Like the MDX, the RDX has good safety ratings. But there are some key differences between the RDX and its fellow Acura. Because of its smaller size, the RDX has less cargo space and only seats five people, while the MDX seats seven. The RDX also has a higher reliability rating than the MDX, and its price is about $6,000 lower on average. Unless you really need the extra cargo and passenger room, you're probably better off saving money by going with the RDX.
