X5 vs. RX: Which Luxury Midsize SUV Is Right for You?

The BMW X5 and the Lexus RX are both luxury midsize SUVs, although they couldn’t be more different. The X5 is one of the sportiest SUVs you can buy; the Lexus RX has earned its mantle as the most popular luxury vehicle with a combination of features, reliability, and affordability.

The X5 favors performance over some creature comforts. It does offer a third-row seat, though it’s designed only for elementary-age kids. (Child seats won’t fit.) The space for the third-row seat, though, does leave relatively generous cargo space when it’s folded. And you don’t have to buy it at all.

By comparison, cargo space is the Lexus’ Achilles heel. Its aggressive looks and fastback rear leave about as many cubic feet of cargo space as in your average large sedan.

Both the BMW X5 and the Lexus RX offer all-wheel drive, comfortable seating for five people, and a plethora of attractive standard features. You can even get relatively fuel-efficient hybrid powertrains in each of them. Only the BMW, however, offers a diesel engine, which is great for those who need to tow or those who just like the power and fuel economy that diesel offers.

The SUVs are quite different, so read on to learn which one is right for you.
