A True "Hot Hatch"

Credit for creating the “hot hatch” category, with “hatch” short for hatchback, is generally given to Volkswagen. Its Golf GTI was introduced at the 1975 Frankfurt Auto Show with a U.S. version, the Rabbit GTI, arriving in 1983.

There were, however, many hot hatchbacks before that first Golf GTI and there have been even more after it.

Perhaps the hottest hatch now on these shores is the Ford Focus RS. While Ford has offered a Focus RS in Europe for several years, the first of these current high performance hatchbacks arrived in the United States last year. The Focus RS returns for 2017 with no significant changes.
