The Basics

The 2016 Ford Explorer and 2016 Buick Enclave are 3-row crossover SUVs. Both models come standard with front-wheel drive but can be upgraded to all-wheel drive. The Explorer seats seven passengers, or six when the optional second-row captain’s chairs are ordered. The Enclave also seats seven, but a second-row bench can boost capacity to eight. The Enclave is 3.6 inches longer and about 300 pounds heavier than the Explorer, but the vehicles’ width and height are similar.

Ford introduced the Explorer in 1991. The first Explorer heavily influenced the development of the modern SUV market. It is currently in its fifth generation, which was released in 2011. The Buick Enclave was introduced for the 2008 model year and is still in its first generation.
